Announcements

Dear all,

A couple of things:

1. The course website is online: https://sites.google.com/site/conceptscmp. I posted notes for the first lecture there.

2. Starting Wednesday, the lectures and tutorials at Weissman will be recorded. The recordings can be found by logging in to https://weizmann.cloud.panopto.eu/Panopto/Pages/Home.aspx with your Weizmann ID and clicking on "Browse". We will find a solution for those of you without a WIS ID.

3. For further reading on band theory, I recommend Ashcroft and Mermin's book, "Solid State Physics", Chapter 8: "Electrons in a periodic potential: general properties". Chapters 9,10 could also be useful ("Electrons in a Weak Periodic Potential" and "The Tight-Binding Method", respectively). You will see more about tight-binding in the tutorial.

Hi all,

A couple of announcements we forgot to announce today:

1. Next week Erez will be absent all week. On Monday we will have a tutorial (for which I just uploaded notes to the website), which will probably extend a little into Wednesday. It will however not take up the full two hours of Wednesday so either we will cut the lesson short, or if you have any questions regarding things we discussed so far we can try to address these.
2. Solutions to the problem set you may send directly to my email or submit as a hard copy to my box (across from Shimon's office). If you choose to send it via email, which is highly recommended, please do so in pdf form and change the file name to read: "CMP_Eyal_Leviatan_Sol1.pdf". Of course, write your name instead of mine as well as the relevant number of the problem set in question.

Per your votes, the final exam will be on Friday, August 2 (exact time and location TBA). The second exam (Moed B) will be in August 15.
