What?
An ISR is an ideal 'Edge' device and can act as the gateways for many different technologies.
The UC Gateway. connects voice and video traffic to PSTN, SIP, or other networks. By adding a UC license you are ready to go.
The Security Network Gateway connects networks and enforces who can access what. Basic security is added in any ISR with a SEC license or any ISR-DNA device (with Network Essentials or Advantage).
The SD-WAN Gateway connects sites using site-2-site VPNs and provide insight in what is happening in these VPN tunnels. In this way we can prioritize voice traffic over normal downloads between the sites, and much more. (Part of Cisco DNA licenses)

The ISR
The ISR1000 is your edge solution with a pre-defined fixed amount of ports. The ISR4000 is modular and more port modules can be added in the back. Take a look at the 1-pager (download below) to find out how many slots each device can support.
The IMAGE
You might have noticed new SKUs for the exact same type of ISR. The normal SKU (ISRxxx/K9) provides only routing, the new SKU (ISRxxx-DNA) provide 2 options. Network Essentials & Network Advantage for the cost of a routing only ISR.
Network Essentials provides all the essential routing capabilities and includes security to that. Now we can build basic hub-n-spoke VPNs.
Network Advantage extends all the routing capabilities with security and APP features in the IOS of the router. Now we can build all sorts of VPNs with application control.
The Software
Did you select Network Essentials as the IOS? --> Add Cisco DNA Essentials to the ISR for a minimum of 3 years.
Cisco DNA Essentials activates the basic Cisco DNA Center features on your Cisco DNA Center server. Including: Basic Automation (PnP Application, Embedded Event Manager), Basic Assurance (Health Dashboards – Network & Client & Application Health Element Management), Software Image Management (Discovery, Inventory, Topology), SD-WAN (1 HnS VPN with app-aware routing).
Did you select Network Advantage as the IOS? --> Add Cisco DNA Advantage or Cisco DNA Premier to the ISR.
Cisco DNA Advantage activates all the Cisco DNA Center features on your Cisco DNA Center server. Everything from above including: Assurance & Analytics (Router 360 ,ENFV 360*, Router underlay insights, ENFV Insights*, 360 pages, Health score, Time Travel, Targeted Insights, Neighbor topology, Path trace, KPIs, Baselining, Trends), SD-WAN (4 HnS/Mesh VPNs with app-aware routing, Service Chaining and DPI).
Cisco DNA Premier adds full SD-WAN (All HnS/Mesh VPNs with app-aware routing, Service Chaining and DPI & vAnalytics)
