Compassion Clinic began out of the University of Louisville Medical School Dean’s Office as an outreach program called “Heart of a Champion,” an event focused on heart health, held in February 2019. The goal of the program was to help residents of Louisville’s Smoketown neighborhood learn about heart health and connect them to care. With the help of many partner organizations, clinicians, volunteers, and local churches, the Heart of a Champion clinics provided attendants with heart health profiles as well as information to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.
After this first event, the program was then handed to the hands of Dr. Karen Krigger. As the director of Health Equity of the Health Sciences Center, Dr. Krigger has made it her mission to promote health education to our local underserved population. As such, the name of the program was changed to Compassion Clinic, with its focus expanded to provide basic health screenings, health education, and other services to the disadvantaged communities of Louisville. This collaborative multi-disciplinary initiative has planted the roots of community-engaged care for the Louisville population, and will continue to provide our disparate communities with resources, support, and knowledge.
