Tobacco consumption is a global epidemic amongst people of all age group and genders. The act of consuming tobacco products has an enormous affect on an individual's physical health. We took up this particular project in order to realize the people who are primarily victims of tobacco usage and the steps that have been taken up by the respective countries to safeguard there citizens against these direct and passive deaths.
We first tried to make out how the usage of tobacco is spread between the genders. As observed in the consumption stats we could see that, almost a third of the male population smokes whereas that ratio falls down to 10% in case of women. We were also able to observe that these trends are not global i.e. there are countries where we have more female smokers than men and also countries where the disparity between the number of male and female smokers is much more than what is generally observed.
After getting a fair idea about the consumption of tobacco in various countries, we analyzed the steps that are being taken by the countries in order to protect people from tobacco consumption in direct as well as indirect sense. This included the bans that have been put by governments on points of sales, advertising, formation of a regulation body, providing harmless alternatives and measures against second-hand smoke exposure. After carefully analyzing the various forms of steps that can be taken against tobacco, we could see that most of the countries are taking the steps towards banning and regularization of tobacco consumption norms, but the countries specifically in the Asia and Africa regions are still low in numbers when it comes to readily providing less harmful or harmless alternatives to tobacco. This can also be the reason that since there are a lot of low and mid income countries in these continents and hence there might be certain set of issues when introducing such reforms since 80% of the total tobacco consumption happens in these type of countries.
To sum it all up, we were able to realize the audience that is majorly affected by tobacco and the steps that are being taken by various governmental institutions to curb the consumption of tobacco and it is a delight to see that majority of countries have set up initiatives to help the people quit tobacco. 31st May is celebrated as World No Tobacco day around the globe and it tells the people about the harmful affects of tobacco use, and how the WHO is fighting this epidemic. This is a great initiative as it also allows people to get back on the track of healthy living and aiding in their act of abstinence from tobacco usage.
