About the Community Vaccination Art Program

We're working to keep people safe and informed about the recent outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19). In an effort to address hesitancy around getting vaccinated against COVID-19, we have committed to working with global partners on a campaign to increase immunization rates and connect people with credible information about COVID-19 vaccines.

Through the Community Vaccination Art Program, we are inspiring people to get vaccinated against COVID-19 through public art murals that will come to life in 12 cities across the US and Canada, including Chicago, Detroit, Edmonton, Jacksonville, Los Angeles, Mesa, Montreal, Ottawa, San Bernardino, San Antonio, Seattle and Washington, DC.

Facebook Open Arts & Amplifier commissioned artists local to each city to create artwork in neighborhoods where there are lower vaccine uptake rates. The murals will be positioned in community gardens, parks and small businesses throughout the summer and fall of 2021, and will be accompanied by a digital social media campaign to help spread the message.

City Criteria

We wanted to ensure a diverse geographic scope of cities so that this campaign would engage a wide array of people, communities and locales.

Artist Criteria

Artists in each city were proactively selected by Facebook Open Arts’ curators and non-profit partner Amplifier Arts. We chose a mix of emerging and established artists, illustrators and designers, many with a background in designing for social justice movements. All artists have a connection to the community where the murals will be placed and are either native to or based in that city or one nearby. We also aimed for a diversity of aesthetic styles and artistic backgrounds.

Goal of the Community Vaccine Program

Our goal is to encourage people in communities with lower vaccination rates to get the vaccine, build trust and connect people with credible information about COVID-19 vaccines.

Commission Criteria

The chosen artists were asked to create designs in response to key topics related to vaccines: community, trust, the value of vaccination, education and access.
