The tradition of the Legacy Robe takes place during the opening night of every Broadway musical featuring a chorus. It originated in 1950 when Bill Bradley, a member of the Gentlemen Prefer Blondes chorus, convinced fellow chorus member Florence Baum to gift him her dressing gown. As a prank, Bradley sent the robe to his friend Arthur Partington, a chorus member in Call Me Madam, on that show's opening night, claiming that it had been worn by the legendary Ziegfeld beauties. Partington added a rose from Ethel Merman's gown and sent it to a chorus member on the following opening night of Guys and Dolls. From there, the robe was passed from show to show in an informal manner, often given to a friend of the previous recipient or awarded to a chorus member based on popularity. Over time, the passing of the Legacy Robe evolved into a formal ceremony with established rules dictating how it is presented, worn, and paraded on stage.
CTL proudly joined the Legacy Robe tradition in June 2023, which recognizes our strong and talented cast members. On opening night, the ensemble member with the most CTL mainstage ensemble credits is presented with the prestigious Legacy Robe. The new recipient then wears the Robe and circles the stage counterclockwise three times, while cast members reach out and touch it for good luck. Finally, the new recipient visits the green room before concluding in the lobby.
