Following completion of the Communication Matrix it may be helpful to create a communication plan that outlines the next steps with regard to communication goals, modes and instructional methods. To the left is an example of a Communication Plan created for a young child with combined vision and hearing loss.
It can be helpful to outline expressive communication opportunities throughout daily routines so that all team members are supporting expressive communication in a consistent and deliberate manner. In the example to the left a team outlines what vocabulary they will model within activities (to support receptive understanding), what PAS opportunities will be provided, what options the child with have to use their simple voice output device, and what unaided communication (gestures, voice, etc) will be reinforced during daily activities.
Some children with combined vision and hearing loss have complex medical needs that impact their overall levels of alertness and engagement.
