Government Arts College, Tiruvannamalai was established in the year 1966 as per G.O.M.S.No.502 Edn., Dated: 06-07-1966 of Tamilnadu. Initially four science and two arts courses of PUC were started in 1966-67.We proud to exhibit that the College is accredited with “B” Grade by NAAC and one among the 14 Government Arts Colleges in the State got the opportunity to receive fund assistance from RUSA in the Phase I. The College is situated on the Puducherry – Bangalore highway, located at the foot of the Mount Arunachala. It has a perfect ambiance for academic pursuits. The college caters to the need of economically and academically backward students in and around Tiruvannamalai district. The College offers 14 UG, 12 PG, degree courses and 10 M.Phil, 10 Ph.D research courses with an intake of nearly 6000 students in both the shifts. It has a team of able and erudite teachers. As an affiliated college of the Thiruvalluvar University, it has to conform to the existing rules of the university.

The growing importance of commerce and management has propounded the necessity of human resource full of business and management skills along with research oriented attitude. Government Arts College, Tiruvannamalai has initiated the endeavors to fulfill the gap of demand and supply of well qualified human resource. The department of commerce found its existence in 1983-84 and established with a vision encompassing aforesaid and giving great Leaders to the Corporate Society in the coming times and a Mission of churning out Budding Managers. The department of Commerce runs with an intake of 650 students in both the shifts with focused objectives of giving Quality Education to the Students.
Presently the department is excelling into new horizons under the Leadership of the Head and the team of 13 faculties. All are abled and students’ centric teachers. The department is devoted to impart knowledge as well as social values for overall development. The department is continuously engaged to develop the overall personality of the students by conducting a number of co-curricular activities like personality development workshop, event management program, Power Point presentations, debate and extempore speech competition, group discussions, essay and report writing competition. In present scenario Commerce is one of the fast growing and worldwide reputed job oriented course. Business program develops not only employable capability but also helps in sharpening entrepreneurial skills among the leaders of corporate world to give a new look at global horizon. Innovation and creativity in business education are the need of the hour. The department is devoted to develop imagination, passion and commitment to do what is new and more meaningful.
The Bachelor of Commerce (abbreviated B.Com.) is an undergraduate degree in commerce and related subjects. The degree is also known as the Bachelor of Commerce. The curriculum generally lasts three years in India. The Bachelor of Commerce degree is designed to provide the student with a wide range of accounting and managerial skills while at the same time building competence in a particular area of business studies; Most universities therefore plan the degree such that additional to their major, students are exposed to general business principles, taking courses in accounting/finance, human resources, statistics, marketing, economics, Taxation and information systems. The Master of Commerce typically requires two years of full-time study. The curriculum is usually concentrated on one subject area such as accounting, actuarial science, business management, corporate governance, human resource management, economics, statistics, finance, marketing or taxation, supply and emphasizes underlying theory as well as practice. Relatedly, programs usually include a thesis component and may be exclusively research based. Programs are sometimes structured such that graduates are eligible for membership of various professional bodies or institutes. Admission to the M.Com is usually on the basis of an existing Bachelor's, or similar compatible degree, generally the Bachelor; often, a "B.Com/B.B.A degree" will be required. Depending on the degree focus, a related undergraduate major and / or a fairly strong quantitative background may also be a prerequisite.

Most universities therefore plan the degree such that additional to their major, students are exposed to general business principles, taking courses in accounting/finance, human resources, statistics, marketing, economics, taxation, computing and information systems. Depending on the institution, a formal academic major may or may not be established. Regardless, the Bachelor of Commerce (Computer Application) requires students to take the majority of their courses in business-accounts with computer related.
