Over the years, we've met many LGBTQ young adults who had rough housing situations. A few were couch surfing because they had been disowned by their parents and were struggling to get on their feet, while others were in college but found the dorms an unsafe enviornment because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Even those who feel comfortable in the dorms face issues with summer housing. Summer can mean going back into the closet or detransitioning for a few months just to secure a roof over one's head.
At Commerce Rainbow Refuge, we are trying to combat this issue by providing safe, affordable, and affirming housing for LGBTQ young adults. We are working to buy a house in Commerce, Texas, a small university town in rural East Texas that will house 5-6 LGBTQ young adults at very little cost to the tenants. This house will serve as a safe haven for LGBTQ youth to help them get on their feet and build community. 🏳️🌈
We serve LGBTQ young adults (18-30 years old) in Northeast Texas with housing related needs. This application is for a mini-grant to help cover summer housing for those in need. Applying does not guarantee a grant, which will be evaluated based on available funds and the need of applicants.
