Ye'yumnuts, As An Opening to Talk About Storied Places 

An Exploration of Storied Place through Place-Based Learning, Oral Tradition, and Place Names

Below is an interactive map showing the locations of several Quw’utsun (Cowichan) villages and culturally significant mountains. Students can click on each of the mapped locations to read and hear more about the sites. They will learn how to pronounce the different place names, what the names mean, and the stories associated with them. The teacher’s guide will provide an overview of the materials, a summary of intended learning outcomes, and suggest possible ways to incorporate the map into lessons. Teaching resources also include worksheets that can be used as part of the suggested classroom activities. We suggest you use do this lesson before attending the site for the first time. The map and activities will help familiarize the students with the landscape of Ye’yumnuts and introduce them to some of the concepts of place-based learning before visiting the site.
