MicroSoft Comic Sans is a TrueType font that is readily available on the net (MicroSoft no longer distribute it in isolation from Windows, but there is no restriction on distribution of existing copies). This package provides metrics and maps to use the font with pdf(La)TeX, in a variety of text shapes, and (to some extent) in mathematics.

The typeface has been supplied with Microsoft Windows since the introduction of Windows 95, initially as a supplemental font in Microsoft Plus! Pack and later in Microsoft Comic Chat. Describing it, Microsoft has explained that "this casual but legible face has proved very popular with a wide variety of people."[2]

Microsoft designer Vincent Connare began working on Comic Sans in 1994 after having already created other fonts for various applications. When he saw a beta version of Microsoft Bob that used Times New Roman in the word balloons of its cartoon characters, he believed the typeface gave the software an overly formal appearance. He believed this was inappropriate for the aesthetics of the program, which was created to introduce younger users to computers. In order to make Microsoft Bob look more suitable for its intended purposes, he decided to create a new typeface with only a mouse and cursor, based on the lettering style of comic books he had in his office, specifically The Dark Knight Returns (lettered by John Costanza) and Watchmen (lettered by Dave Gibbons).[4]

He completed Comic Sans too late for inclusion in Microsoft Bob, and the typeface would go unreleased until the programmers of Microsoft 3D Movie Maker, which also used cartoon guides and speech bubbles, adopted it.[5] The speech bubbles were eventually phased out and replaced by actual sound, but Comic Sans stayed for the program's pop-up windows and help sections. The typeface later shipped with the Windows 95 Plus! Pack, and was the primary font of the Travel desktop theme. It was later included as a system font for the OEM versions of Windows 95. Finally, it became one of the default fonts for Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Comic Sans is also used in Microsoft Comic Chat, which was released in 1996 with Internet Explorer 3.0.

A research article published by Cognition in 2010 showed disfluency could lead to improved retention and classroom performance. The article stated that disfluency can be produced merely by adopting fonts that are slightly more difficult to read.[25] In the case studies cited in the article, Comic Sans was used to introduce disfluency.[26] A 2010 Princeton University study involving presenting students with text in a font slightly harder to read found that they consistently retained more information from material displayed in fonts perceived as ugly or disfluent (Monotype Corsiva, Haettenschweiler, and Comic Sans Italic) than in a simpler, more traditional typeface such as Helvetica.[25]

Several reinterpretations of Comic Sans have been created as a result of its popularity. In April 2014, font designer Craig Rozynski released a modernized version of Comic Sans called Comic Neue. In 2015, graphic designer Ben Harman created Comic Papyrus (later renamed "Comic Parchment" for legal reasons), which combines the features of Comic Sans with the similarly panned typeface Papyrus.[31] In 2019, Tabular Type Foundry released Comic Code, a monospaced version of the typeface.[32]

Dave Gibbons, whose work was one of the inspirations for Comic Sans, said that it was "a shame they couldn't have used just the original font, because [Comic Sans] is a real mess. I think it's a particularly ugly letter form."[37]

On May 22, 2012, The Comic Sans Song[46] was released by YouTube content creator and musician Gunnarolla, in collaboration with musician Andrew Huang. The song makes reference to Comic Sans and features commentary around the impact the font has had on pop-culture.

The problem is the comicsans package change a lot of font families, so I would like to avoid setting everything manually to the right font (actually I don't which are the default fonts for book document) and use comic font only for few paragraph where it is needed.

You could also install winfonts into a local root (cf. Create a local texmf tree in MiKTeX). This package makes several TrueType fonts installed in the Windows system available for pdfTeX. But see next point and note the warning in the documentation of this package:

I do not know, whether this is valid for the Comic Sans part, too, and if this also relates to the fact, that the TrueType version of Comic Sans lacks font files for italic (or slanted) and bold italic.

Instead of this second approach TrueType/OpenType fonts are better directly available with LuLaTeX and XeLaTeX using the package fontspec (this may be loaded in background by another package, most notably luatextra and xltxtra). Create a new font family and define again the corresponding text font command as above

Comic Sans MS is the groovy script font which was first supplied with the Windows 95 Plus! pack. Although it might be seen as a novelty typeface, which is great for titles, it's also extremely readable on-screen at small sizes, making it a useful text face. A note from Vincent Connare, Comic Sans' designer.

During 1994 I noticed that a large number of cartoon/comic style software titles were under development at Microsoft. As Microsoft Creative Writer had a need for fun fonts, I had an idea to make a lettering script similar to the lettering used by the major comic books. There was a consistent style used in comics, which was quite unlike the style of lettering you see in newspaper cartoon strips. I also noticed that many people were inappropriately using drafting lettering in comic speech balloons. I started to make the font in October 1994. Initially it was picked up by the team working on Microsoft 3D Movie Maker for use in speech balloons. As 3D Movie Maker progressed, the programmers added sound so that the characters didn't use balloons. However, the regular weight was still used for help pop-ups and dialog boxes. Because the regular weight was cleanly hinted for the screen it was also included with the Windows 95 OEM version, the Windows 95 Plus pack, Publisher and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Hope you find the font fun.

Interesting fact - the euro has eyes.

Comic Sans MS version historyVersion 2.10 - This version includes some minor table updates, but no new glyphs. Version 2.00 - Comic Sans version 2.00 was added to our core fonts for the Web page on 4 March 1998. This WGL4 version includes the euro currency symbol. Version 1.20 - Comic Sans MS version 1.20 was first supplied with Microsoft Internet Explorer 3, and included as one of the original Microsoft core fonts for the Web. This version was also supplied with Internet Explorer 4. Version 1.10 - This version of Comic Sans MS was supplied with the Windows 95 Plus! pack.

First of all, I should acknowledge that comparing these fonts is a bit apples to oranges (which are both fruits, mind you), in that they both convey completely different moods: Helvetica looks strong and serious, and Comic Sans is usually used in situations where one wants to look playful and casual.

So, the typographic fundamentals of Comic Sans are very poor as used in high-resolution situations, but Comic Sans was never intended to be used in this manner, and that is part of why its considered such a bad font.

So, the story of Comic Sans is not that of a really terrible font, but rather of a mediocre font, used incorrectly on a massive scale. Windows 95 was the first operating system to really hit it big. Just as computers were starting to pop up in nearly every home in America, Windows 95 was finding itself installed on all of those computers, and with it, the font Comic Sans. So now, nearly every man, woman, child, and bake sale organizer find themselves armed with publishing power unlike civilization had ever seen; and few of them really had any design sense.

Developing a hybrid typeface wasnt easy. For Johari,it required learning the process of typography, speaking to linguists and getting her font right. This taught me a lot. I had to overcome the jargon of grids and x heights, ascenders and descenders. Hanif Kureshi, typographer and ex-colleague helped me understand these type concepts, says Johari. For the entire Hinglish Project package,Johari credits the film maker who helped make the video and webdevelopers who helped code the website and ofcourse the agency heads and the CEOs of DDB Mudra.

The interactive website allows visitors to type messages in Hinglish and the font is available for free download on the Hinglish Project website,so tourists can use them as word-maps when they travel. There are quick-flick books made for easy reference, and merchandise too. ff782bc1db
