I like to make dragon versions of characters! It's enjoyable to determine what aspects of a character would work well on a dragon. Plus, dragons are versatile enough to do a lot with.
Examples:
Green Dragon - A cryptologist character with a theme of plants in his name and such! Added electronic-looking pattern on wings, including key from boots and sleeve design. Designed tail to look vine-like due to character having a plant association. Generally made dragon look prickly to match personality.
Blue Dragon - Character hairstyle was important and couldn't be replicated with horns, so this guy got a mane! Added band on tail that's colored like his hair tie, but placed to make it brush-like since the character enjoys drawing. Included elements that look knife-like as a reference to his culinary talent. Used the character's color scheme, with gradient on legs to replicate a fingerless glove look.
Red Dragon - A used car salesperson! For her, I gave the dragon a mechanical look. The feet are darker than the body in coloration to loosely mimic tires, and hoof-like similar to horses. The underbelly has a faint plaid pattern to resemble her blazer's design.
I've been practicing the Danganronpa art style, especially due to having Danganronpa characters! Here's an example of the cryptologist from the above image carousel.
