In collaboration with UNE COM, IPSG, UNE SSW-SO, and CECE, Social Determinants of Health Month is a series of hosted events around accessible, diverse, inclusive, and equitable medicine.
Throughout the month of October, UNE student clubs and organizations will host guest lecturers, student and physician panels, and alternative opportunities for the UNE community to learn about social factors impacting health.

We are collecting anything related to sexual health and reproductive health to donate to shelters and food kitchens that are lacking these products. We're looking for NEW supplies that may fall into those categories, including (but not limited to): menstrual products (pads/tampons/cups), panty liners, underwear, baby wipes, pregnancy tests, STI prevention (condoms/dental dams), lubrication, barrier protection (cervical caps/sponges/diaphragms), spermicide, emergency contraceptives, and more!

The Ophthalmology/Otolaryngology Club (AOCOO-HNS) is collecting unwanted eyeglasses and sunglasses to be recycled through ReSpectacle for people in need of eyewear. As long as they are not broken, they can be donated! Donation boxes will be placed in the COM lounge and in Alfond Health Sciences in the second-floor lobby. This presentation will provide an overview of the population held in prisons and jails along with how the current incarceration system adversely affects the economy and our communities. It will also highlight the some of the work advocates are doing to improve the carceral system. Work is being done on multiple fronts both by those inside and by those in communities to achieve change and reduce the adverse public health impacts that the current system has on Maine communities.

Dr. Isok Kim is the an Associate Professor and Director of the MSW program at the University at Buffalo School of Social Work. He has over 20 years of experience working with immigrants and refugees in mental health and substance treatment settings, first as a clinical social worker and later as a social work scholar. He currently collaborates with the Karen refugee community in Buffalo to better respond to the community’s mental health needs and overall well-being. Come listen to him talk about Asian-American Social Determinants of Health and Mental Health in the United States!
