Community is a sense of home: be it the buildings, the weather, or the people. The community of Columbus, Ohio, is incredibly diverse, passionate, and in a constant state of change. Every interaction we had with community members - from the kids at PALS, to our People's Justice Project lead Amber - was enlightening as they shed light on the various issues faced by the growing community of over 850,000 people.
Understanding is empathy both driving and informing personal interactions with others. By attempting to place ourselves in the shoes of those we were serving with in Columbus, we created meaningful relationships with community members despite our temporary stay. We framed our experiences through the perspective of antagonized populations, leaders within the local community, and at-risk youth.
Justice is acting in a way that administers and advocates for fairness and enables equity. Organizations in Columbus like the Juvenile Justice Coalition embodied movements for justice by pushing their communities to make sure they were registered to vote and encouraging them to think more critically about the effects of the criminal justice and education system in their communities as a result of poor policies.
Empowerment is the process of gaining strength and confidence which enables you to take control of your life and claim your rights. Through our service with Columbus, we were able to gain knowledge about the issues in these communities and reflect on them. This exposure helped to create awareness about the problems affecting these people and the lack of advocacy they receive. Through these realizations we became more motivated to create change and enable justice.
Perseverance is staying persistent in a course of action, purpose, or state of mind. Throughout the week, the people, communities, & organizations we served with reflected this value through their roles and interactions amongst one another. The Columbus People's Partnership (CPP) - a coalition of faith, community, and student groups - are collectively united for restorative and transformative justice across the community sector.
How can we, as active citizens, help empower others to persevere despite the oppression and hardships in their daily life choices?
