annex - to add more land to one's own city

artifact - an object made by humans

cooperation - willing to work together and get along

cultural practice - traditions of a culture, such as art, music, holidays, language, and religion

democracy - government by the people

enslaved - held in slavery against one's will and forced to work without pay

entrepreneur - a person who organizes resources for business

goods - objects that satisfy people's wants

history - the study of people, places, and events of the past

historians - people who investigate the past and draw conclusions

immigration - when people move into one country from another country

leisure activity - activities that people do when they have free time from work and school

migration - when people move from one part of a country or state to another

pandemic - an outbreak of a disease that happens over a wide area and spreads quickly

photograph - a picture made by using a camera that records an image on a surface sensitive to light

pioneer - one of the first people to settle in a territory

primary source - a first-hand record that comes from the time period you are studying

reform - change into an improved form or condition; make something better

responsibility - working with others in the community for the common good

skyscraper - a very tall building of many stories

secondary source - a later account written by a historian who was not present at the event

services - an action or activity that satisfy people’s wants

surplus - extra that remains when someone's use or need is satisfied

technology - the use of knowledge to invent new devices or tools

telegraph - a device used to send messages by code over long distances

transportation - the methods people use to move themselves and their goods from one place to another

upward - toward or to a higher position or place
