To meet the varying needs of its users, Columbia Libraries is currently offering access to two separate citation management softwares, EndNote and RefWorks. Both support retrieval and storage of references from bibliographic databases and the use of that information in formatting in-text citations, footnotes, endnotes, and bibliographies. Individuals involved in long-term careers in research may find EndNote's greater customizability, additional features (e.g.ability to handle figures as well as citations), and personal computer storage of data more to their needs, while those who simply need to gather and use citations in current class writing may find the convenience and ease of RefWorks' online use and storage just what they need. Users of both are likely to appreciate the powerful and ubiquitous citation gathering capacities provided by RefWorks server-based format, as well as the fact that bibliographic information may be passed easily from one system to the other.

Since such files are relatively easy (for an advanced user) to create, many can also be found at the websites of other institutions using EndNote, using a web search engine such as Googleto find documents containing the words "endnote filter" (or "endnote connection") and the name of the database for which the file is needed. The Electronic Text Service often can also create a filter for you on its own or with the assistance of the EndNote technical support team.

The text, abstract, dedication, acknowledgments, and table of contents are double spaced. Normally, quotations of eight lines or more are indented and single spaced. Footnotes, endnotes, and bibliographic entries should be single spaced with double spacing between each entry.

It's hard to predict what 3 years out will look like, let alone 10 or 20 or 50! When Olin Library opened in 1961, it was built to house more than 2 million books. Yet some likened its faade to an IBM punch card, foretelling a future much driven by technology. At that time, something like 30 percent of IBM's business was in selling blank punch cards. Imagine if they, and we, had banked on a future in which punch card computing continued to dominate technological advances! I do firmly believe that the research library will remain at the very core of the university. We will become even more essential in empowering Cornell's research and learning community as it grapples with changes in technology, intellectual property rights, data-intensive research and scholarly communication practices. The Department Chair is responsible for general management of the department, including hiring of faculty, setting budgetary priorities, and communicating with the departmental faculty at large and the higher-level university administrators. This is the person to come see if there are general departmental issues that concern you, such as matters of overall policy or general faculty concern. The Chair is always in close communication with the DGS, DMAP, and DIRECTOR A&F, so (depending on the nature of the issue) these individuals can also be consulted regarding such issues: chances are that they will pass them on to the Chair for action. The Chair welcomes student input in our growing department, but is generally not well placed to handle specific issues related to specific students.

(1) If a project meets EITHER of the following conditions, it must have Columbia IACUC approval: (A) the work is done on Columbia campus or involves animals kept on campus or (B) the work is funded (even partially) by a grant or gift that runs through the university.

In their first year, students are expected to develop a preliminary project, from the general concept/design through implementation, the latter scheduled generally for the summer of their first year. Students can apply for competitive funding from the department as well as the funds they apply for from outside the university. THE PROPOSAL MUST BE SUBMITTED TO ADVISORS AT LEAST TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO DUE DATE IN THE DEPARTMENT. Those who receive funding from the department are obligated to write the results in a report. Students have the option of deferring access to these funds until the end of their second year.

The History Department requires that papers contain endnotes or footnotes for proper documentation. Chicago style, as found in the Chicago Manual of Style is mandatory; the choice between footnotes and endnotes may vary from one professor to another. MLA, APA, and AMA documentation is unacceptable for use in History papers.

PRO TIP: When formatting endnotes/footnotes in Chicago style think of the note as a sentence! The elements of the sentence are separated by commas, not periods, like in the bibliography. Also, in a sentence, you'd never refer to an author last name first, right?

The following examples are for the Notes-Bibliography system of Chicago/Turabian. This means that you are citing your courses using either footnotes or endnotes.
