Founded in the fall of 2014, the First-Generation, Low-Income Partnership has served as the spearhead of the First-Generation, Low-Income (FLI) student movement across all four undergraduate schools here at Columbia University. Our main focus is to ensure that the FLI experience at Columbia is just as rewarding for us as it is for the traditional student body.
FLIP hosts weekly events rotating between game nights, social mixers, and discussion topics based around issues concerning the FLI community. At certain times we'll also hold special events like self-care nights, alumni panels, and co-sponsored events with other clubs.
Alongside QuestBridge, we also help organize Class Awareness Month in November. In addition to this, FLIP also participates in GEN week during the spring semester.
Come through to an event sometime, we always have snacks and drinks!
The FLIP Executive Board works throughout the year to ensure we're doing our best to advocate for the needs of FLI students. Our weekly general body meetings help inform the policies we push for and which resources we strive to provide. With the help of a few cooperative administrators and fellow student leaders we've been able to realize a few amazing projects, which you can check out on our resources page.
As first-generation, low-income students, our experiences at Columbia are often misunderstood. The typical Columbia demographic is very much the opposite of our own, but that difference should not deter FLI students from participating in the larger Columbia community. Raising awareness of FLI issues allows us to feel understood and valued as students at Columbia. All of our events are open to non-FLI students as well, especially our programming during Class Awareness Month.
