Cutthroats Advance to First Ever Championship Game
The Cutthroats played in their second consecutive American League Championship. Last year they lost to the Chill by an 8-7 score. This year they will take on the Hitmen. In the first round, the Hitmen actually lost to Carlos Gonzales Sports. The Hitmen protested the game because they believed that Cargo Sports had some illegal players. Their protest was accepted, so they advanced and Cargo was sent home.
The Hitmen struck first in the top of the first, with a rbi-single by Steve Root. Mark Link, the starting pitcher for the Cutthroats, would retire the next two batters to get out of the inning.
In the bottom half, John Hawley would start it off with a single and a stolen base. Sconce would get on with a walk. Two batters later, Joe Cordo would hit his first homerun of the postseason to make it 3-1. Daub would follow with a single. Two batters later, Mark Link would hit a single to bring Daub to the plate, but he wouldn't score. The catcher blocked the plate causing a collision. Daub would be called out because he never touched home plate. Daub would have to leave the game with a high ankle sprain.
The Cutthroats would strike again in the fourth inning. Reichelt led off with a double; Hawley followed with walk. With one out, Baughn hit a fly ball to right field that everyone presumed would be caught. The ball wasn't and Reichelt raced around third to score, but he was thrown out at the plate. Cordo then hit a two-run single to make it 5-1.
Mark Link and the Cutthroat's defense sailed through the second, third, and fourth innings. But they came into some trouble in the fifth. Chairez, Gums, Adair, and Root would all reach base via errors. It wasn't until they hit some easy infield pop flies that the Cutthroats were able to end the inning. At the end of it, the Cutthroats gave up five runs-none of them earned. They were now trailing 6-5.
It didn't take long for the Cutthroats to answer. Bielecki, Link, and Herold would all start the inning of with hits. Reichelt would get walked and Sconce would get beaned to load the bases. Baughn would hit another fly ball to right field that was terribly misplayed. Link would score. Joe Cordo would then hit a double that almost broke through the fence in center field. All three runs would score. Fernandez, Bielecki, Reichelt, Hawley, and Sconce would all get hits to break the game open 17-6.
With an attempt to save Link for the championship, the Cutthroats went with Baughn to finish off the game. He struck out the side in the sixth and gave up one run in the seventh.
The Cutthroats weren't finished scoring. In the bottom of the sixth, the Cutthroats reached base on a few errors by the Hitmen. Kellen Sorauf pinched hit for Link and hit an rbi-single. Herold did the same. The Cutthroats batted around the lineup to get back to the red hot Cordo. Cordo hit his fourth hit of the game which brought in two more rbis to give him 10 for the game-a new Cutthroat record.
The Cutthroats took the victory with a 24-7 score. It was the fourth time they got 20 hits in a game. They will take on the Bad News Bears in the championship next week!
