Cutthroats Win with 8 Players
Just as it was with the day before, the Cutthroats only had 8 players. This time, the Cutthroats were the home team. They saved their ace, Mark Link, to pitch in this one.
In the top of the first, Steve Root hit a double off of Link to break up his no-hit bid early. But when he tried to steal third, he was thrown out by Ken Reichelt to keep the ‘three up, three down’ intact.
With one out in the bottom half, Andy Daub hit a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Graham Baughn then hit a single to bring in Daub. The right fielder misplayed the pall and Baughn got to second. Jon Bielecki would then bring in Baughn with a single to make it 2-0 in favor of the Cutthroats.
In the bottom of the second, Daub and Baughn would hit back to back doubles to make the score 3-0. Unfortunately, that would be all the runs for the Cutthroats in the game.
On the defensive side of things, Link was cruising. He had ‘three up, three down’ for five straight innings going into the top of the sixth. He had two strikeouts, and then he gave up a hit to Morrison. That seemed to rattle him just enough to bean the next batter. With two runners on, Adair would hit a double down the line to bring in Morrison. With an aggressive runner rounding third, Baughn pulled off a perfect relay to get Gums out at the plate.
The Hitmen would get two runners on in the seventh, but they wouldn’t advance past third. In the eighth, Baughn would make two plays at shortstop to record all of the outs, including a 6-4-3 double play.
In the top of the 9th, Adair would get his second hit of the game. A passed ball would move him along to second. With one out, Medford would get a hit to bring in Adair and make the score 3-2. The Cutthroats didn’t want to take any chances, so they did a battery change. Herold came into catch, and Baughn came into pitch.
The next two batters were no match for Baughn. They both struck out to end the game. Baughn received his second save of the season-breaking the Cutthroat’s single season record. The Cutthroats improved to (12-4) on the season. The Hitmen went back down to the .500 mark at (7-7-1).
