Cutthroats Fall with 8 Players
The Cutthroats were back at it against the Hitmen. With low attendance, the 'Throats were forced to take the field with eight players. Since the Hitmen are on the playoff bubble, they opted to enforce the automatic out for the 9th batting spot.
The Cutthroats would strike with a big first inning. Hawley, Daub, and Herold would start the game off with hits. Reichelt would later get on with a walk. They would take advantage of some Hitmen errors to score 4 runs in the inning.
Ken Reichelt would start again for the Cutthroats. He pitched pretty well, considering there were only six defenders behind him. He would give up some big hits in the third inning to make the score 4-2.
Chris Dovey would hit an rbi-single in the top of the fifth to make it 6-2 in favor of the Cutthroats. In the bottom half, the Hitmen's bats came alive. Sandoval would hit an easy fly ball to center field, Cordo and Hawley were playing in the gaps (two outfielders)-forcing both of them to run to center field. Both of them called for the catch. Unfortunately, a small collision occurred and the ball dropped. Whitson would then follow with an rbi-double. Escota would reach by an error and then George Adair would hit an rbi-single to make it 6-4. After two outs, Steve Root would hit an rbi-single to bring them within one.
In the top of the sixth, Hawley would hit a triple. Daub would follow with a sacrifice fly to left field to make the score 7-5.
Reichelt would pitch into trouble again in the seventh inning. With the score still 7-5, two outs and a runner on second base, he faced Brandon Wartella. With an 0-2 count, Reichelt pitched an inside fastball that ended up hitting Wartella on the foot. Steve Root would then hit a liner to right center that wouldn't be caught with all of the open real estate out there. Root would be credited with a two-run rbi triple. With the game tied, Reichelt would pitch an outside fastball when Herold was setup inside, resulting in a passed ball. Root would trot in to take the lead 8-7.
Andy Daub would come in to pitch in the 8th. With two outs, he would get Whitson to hit a grounder up the middle. Dovey would field the ball cleanly, but would throw it wide to first base. Whitson would be credited with an infield single, but advanced to second on the error. Escota would then hit a rbi-single to make it 9-7.
The Cutthroats would go into the 9th inning with their backs against the wall. With two outs, Cordo would hit a double and Mark Link would follow with a single. Reichelt came to the plate. He was having a pretty good game, going 2 for 3. But he would fly out to right field to end the game.
The Cutthroats dropped to (11-4) on the season. The Hitmen moved above the .500 mark at (7-6-1). These two teams will face each other tomorrow.
