I currently serve as Assistant Director of Composition (ADC) at Wayne State University (WSU), located in Detroit, Michigan, where I will receive my Ph.D. in English with a specialization in rhetoric and writing studies, in May 2024. My research focuses on feminist rhetorical theory, empathy studies, and critical pedagogy. My dissertation explores empathy in rhetoric and writing studies, specifically by triangulating empathy as it appears in the writing classroom, in writing studies as a discipline, and in public space. Within my dissertation, I have collected data from instructor interviews, student focus groups, classroom observations, publication archives, and rhetorical analysis of three artifacts that speak to the issue of book bans; through all of which, I explore how empathy is constructed. During my program, I have earned multiple travel awards for conferences from WSU, the King Chávez Parks Future Faculty Fellowship from the State of Michigan, and the Paul and Barbara Couture Scholarship for notable research from WSU English Department.
In my administrative role as ADC, in addition to regular administrative duties including collecting syllabus and organizing and leading Composition Committee meetings, I have organized and hosted Wayne State's Teaching of Writing Conference during the 2022-2023 academic year. This year's conference theme was 'rhetoric outside the lines' and drew nearly 30 presenters. We also hosted Dr. Staci Perryman-Clark as our keynote speaker. To bolster programmatic commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, during my tenure as ADC, I spearheaded development of a programmatic DEI statement, assisted in integrating critical race theory and antiracist pedagogy in our English 1020 (first-year writing) course, and developed antiracist pedagogy training modules to be used by our department's composition faculty.
