Collective memory is not merely a record of the past but a powerful force that shapes how groups understand themselves and act in the present. This pre-conference aims to bring together scholars interested in the social psychological processes involved in the creation of collective memories and in the ways these memories influence contemporary thought and behavior. In light of recent political developments that increasingly seek to control historical narratives, the pre-conference will also highlight the role of power in collective memory.
The preconference opens at 9 a.m. and starts with a keynote by Johanna Vollhardt (Clark University). The keynote will be followed by two presentation sessions: a Talk Panel featuring 15-minute talks, and a Blitz Panel with concise 5-minute presentations. To foster dialogue and integration, talks will be organized into thematic clusters. In the late afternoon, a roundtable on collective memory and power will bring together five invited panelists - Ana Figueiredo (Universidad de O'Higgins), Laurent Licata (Université Libre de Bruxelles), Sandra Obradović (LSE), Elif Sandal-Önal (Universität Bielefeld), and Michelle Twali (NYU). The preconference concludes at 5:30 p.m.
