Karl is the owner, designer and force behind Collaborative Bathrooms. He has spent his life working with his hands and building in various forms. It began with a wooden boat in his 20’s. Since then, he has lovingly restored their 1800’s farmhouse and built a barn and small cabin on the property west of Northfield. He loves to build furniture and spends time out in his workshop whenever time allows. Karl spent the last 20 years owning and running a bakery in Burnsville. He chose a new career in remodeling bathrooms because he could use his remodeling skills as a platform to work on projects for families in our community.
Karl lives in the country just west of Northfield. Along with his lovely wife, Carolyn, he raised two children, Grant and Millie. Grant is studying computer science at Union College in New York. Millie is studying biology and many other things at Connecticut College in Connecticut.
In his free time Karl loves to carve wooden spoons. After carving a single spoon, with some basic carving tools lent to him, he was hooked. As a member of Cannon Valley Makers(CVM) he had been thinking of teaching a woodworking class when he struck on a novel idea. Why not host a drop in at CVM each week and learn how to carve spoons with other people interested in the same thing. In the spring of 2023 “Spoon night at the Makers” began. It quickly became a popular evening and others volunteered to help teach. He’s now carved several hundred spoons and the Thursday nights are still going. “It’s ridiculously hard to take a log and turn it into a spoon! Wooden spoons are really a small sculpture. Every single inch is a curve. The challenge is so much fun.”
