Indigenous Mapping Icons (Australia)
We will create a collaborative map together; everyone will be working on the same map so please be respectful and do not delete anyone's work.
1. Sign into your Google account.
2. Use this link to go to the MyMaps 1 project: http://bit.ly/2lGQsi7
3. Make sure you are in edit mode (you will need to be signed in to your Google account). If you do not see the editing tools you may need to sign into the map.
4. Click on the layer that says "home town" and make sure it has a blue highlight on the left side. Search for your home town and add it to the map. Give it a title.
5. Click on the layer that says "special places" and make sure it has a blue highlight on the left side. Search for a place that you consider special and that you are willing to share with others. Use an icon that shows something meaningful. Give it a title.
6. Refresh your screen and look at all of the different places that have been added to the map.
Make sure the layer is highlighted with a blue bar on the left side.
If your place marker winds up in the wrong layer, drag and drop it to the correct layer.
Use custom icons to tell your story.

you can add a custom icon by uploading an image, searching, or using a URL
In this activity we will add content to our place marks to tell our story.
1. Go back to the group map http://bit.ly/2lGQsi7 and find your home town and special places markers. Open them in edit mode (click on the pencil in the marker balloon).
2. Add text to the description box to tell us something interesting about your home town and special place.
3. Click on the camera icon to add images and video.
4. Preview your map by clicking on the Preview icon. Explore your map in Preview mode by clicking on the panels and map icons.
5. View your map on your phone.
Download deck as PowerPoint slides.
In this activity we will go beyond points and learn how to add polygons and KML/KMZ map files.
1. Go to https://drive.google.com Click on +New and create a folder. Open the folder and click on +New > More > Google My Maps to create a map inside your folder.
2. Download the files in the folder, then upload them to your Google Drive folder (your My Maps and your KMZ map files should now be in the same folder).

3. Add the files to your My Maps by creating a layer and importing them.
3a. The Earth Engine layer "OLD FOREST LOSS 2000-2014.kml" was created by Brian Thom and his students, out of an Earth Engine analysis using the techniques outlined on these slides. It shows the extent of deforestation (derived from the Hansen dataset) from 2000-2014 in the Indigenous territories of the Hul'qumi'num Peoples on Vancouver Island.
3b. The file "Hwteshutsun_IndigenousProtectedArea.kml" shows the effective land protection of the Hul'qumi'num people who challenged large-scale clearcutting at this sacred site. It is now a vital watershed in this otherwise heavily logged region. This file was derived from an ArcGIS public lands dataset.
5. Add a polygon to your map to outline a new deforested area you can identify in the more recent Satellite image in My Maps (by selecting the basemap).
You have now added polygons by using KMZ files that were created in GIS software, Earth Engine, and using the polygon tool in My Maps.
5. Share your My Maps.
