Oswald, the man accused of killing President Kennedy, was a self-proclaimed Marxist. He defected to Russia for a time. He married a Russian girl and then returned to the United States with her. In April 1963, Oswald attempted to kill an anti-Communist leader named Edwin Walker. He had been to the Cuban embassy in Mexico in September to consider defecting to Cuba.
On the surface, it seemed obvious that the assassination of Kennedy was done as a Communist grudge, perhaps instigated by Castro himself.
President Johnson was concerned that the impression might result in World War Three.
