Coil — Kinetic Speed Reader
Effective July 26, 2026
Coil is designed to work locally on your device. We do not operate any servers, and we do not collect, store, sell, or share your personal information. There are no accounts, no advertising, and no analytics or tracking of any kind.
What Stays on Your Device
Your reading content: Books you fetch, documents you import (PDF/EPUB/TXT), and saved news articles are stored only in your device's local browser storage (localStorage and IndexedDB).
Your settings and progress: Reading positions, bookmarks, speed, and theme preferences are stored locally.
Deleting a book in the app, clearing the app's data, or uninstalling the app removes this information. We never see it.
Network Requests the App Makes on Your Behalf
Coil only connects to the internet when a feature you use requires it. The services below receive your IP address and the specific request, as any web server does. We do not send them anything else, and we receive nothing back about you.
Project Gutenberg (gutenberg.org): When you fetch a public-domain book by ID.
RSS/Atom feeds you add: When you load a news feed, the app contacts the feed's own server.
Free Dictionary API (dictionaryapi.dev): When you double-click a word to look up its definition. Offline lookups use a bundled dictionary and make no request.
Public relay proxies (corsproxy.io, api.codetabs.com): The web (browser) version only, to work around browser cross-origin limits when fetching books or feeds. These relays see the URL being fetched. The Android app connects directly and does not use them.
MyMemory Translation API (mymemory.translated.net) — when you use in-app translation on a device without Chrome's on-device Translator API (Android, iOS, Safari, Firefox). The text you choose to translate is sent to this third-party service to be translated. On desktop Chrome, translation instead runs entirely on-device and nothing is sent anywhere.
The app's typefaces are bundled with the app itself — no font service is contacted.
Purchases
The optional Premium unlock on Android is processed entirely by Google Play Billing. We receive only an anonymous confirmation that the purchase succeeded — never your name, email, or payment details.
Read-Aloud and Kids Mode
The "Read to Me" feature uses your device's built-in text-to-speech engine. Depending on your device settings, your operating system's speech service may process the spoken text. Kids Mode collects no information whatsoever and shows no advertising.
Children's Privacy
Coil does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. There is nothing to collect: the app has no accounts, no messaging, and no data transmission beyond the content requests listed above.
Changes to This Policy
If a future version of Coil changes how data is handled, this policy will be updated and the effective date above revised.
