Legend has it that Spanish Explorer Juan De La Cruz overcame the demons believed to be protecting the peaks and located gold. He used the Indians from the northern New Mexico region to remove the treasure out on their backs. Legend says the Indians were killed after they carried the gold from the peaks. De La Cruz and his party then put the gold onto their pack animals and headed for Mexico City. But, Huajatolla wasn't willing to give up the gold. The demons attacked the greedy men and their cache of gold rained across the peaks. Part of the treasure was found by a passerby in 1811, but the rest of the treasure has never been found.
