I began this journey after helping a close friend from our MPH program at Mount Sinai with her medical school application materials. While looking at her vignettes and essays, I instantly knew exactly how to perfect and expand upon them.
Once I finished helping her, I wanted to provide similar assistance to more people, and I needed a way to advertise my service. I decided to make fliers to hang around Mount Sinai's buildings, and I chose Cogent for my brand name. Within a few days, I received a request for help from another MPH classmate who was also applying to medical school. After reviewing a draft of his personal statement, I knew again exactly how to restructure, edit, and expand upon it. I also provided markups, prompts, and thorough reviews to help him explain himself and provide more critical details.
After this, more prospective clients began reaching out, and I helped them not only with admissions statements, but academic articles, research papers, resumes, and dissertations. From there, I began to build an online presence, and since then, I have been providing this type of assistance for about 5 years. Helping my client base of students, researchers, laboratory scientists, doctors, nurses, teachers, and others has been my greatest achievement thus far. In fact, making progress as a freelancer ultimately led me to a job as an editorial quality assurance specialist for a medical communications firm. I have also pursued medical and legal transcription.
When I review a client's work, I provide both a "tracked" and "clean" version of my revisions. This way, they can see the exact in-line changes I made to their draft, and then compare that with the finished product. I also leave extensive comments in the margins justifying my changes, and I provide additional writing advice and suggestions for expansion at the end of the clean version.
