The Colorado Forensic Investigators Group (COFIG) was established in 2012 to bring together forensic professionals from across Colorado with a shared goal: improving collaboration, communication, and consistency in forensic and crime scene investigations. From the outset, COFIG was envisioned as a forum where practitioners from local, state, and federal agencies could openly share knowledge, discuss challenges, and learn from one another outside of formal casework.
In its early years, COFIG served primarily as a networking and discussion group, providing an informal setting for investigators to exchange ideas, review emerging technologies, and talk through real-world issues impacting forensic work in Colorado. Meetings often emphasized practical problem-solving, lessons learned, and professional development, helping to break down silos between agencies and disciplines.
As forensic science and investigative technologies evolved, so did COFIG’s focus. The group increasingly emphasized interdisciplinary collaboration, emerging technologies, and alignment with best practices and national standards. While participation naturally fluctuated over time due to operational demands, COFIG’s core mission—strengthening the forensic community through cooperation and shared expertise—remained constant.
Today, COFIG is in a period of reorganization and revitalization, building on its foundation established in 2012 while adapting to modern investigative needs. The group is focused on growing membership, increasing training and knowledge-sharing opportunities, and reinforcing interagency partnerships to ensure COFIG continues to serve as a valuable resource for Colorado’s forensic and investigative professionals.
We are a collaborative group of professionals who share a common interest in advancing our skills, knowledge, and connections within our field. Our members come from a wide range of backgrounds, agencies, and experience levels, but we’re united by a commitment to learning from one another, sharing best practices, and strengthening professional relationships across disciplines.
COFIG members include individuals at different stages of their careers—from those just getting started to highly experienced practitioners. This diversity is one of our strengths. Members contribute through open discussion, peer-to-peer learning, training opportunities, and mutual support. Whether you’re looking to expand your technical knowledge, stay current with emerging trends, or build a professional network, you’ll find a welcoming and engaged community here.
No prior experience is required to join; however, at a minimum, members must be employed full-time in the field of forensic investigation at a law enforcement agency or forensic laboratory within the state of Colorado. An interest in the subject matter and a willingness to participate respectfully and collaboratively are far more important than your resume. We value curiosity, professionalism, and a desire to learn. Members with more experience often serve as informal mentors, while newer members bring fresh perspectives and questions that benefit the entire group.
Joining the club is straightforward. Prospective members are asked to complete a brief application so we can better understand their background and interests and ensure alignment with the club’s mission and values. The application is not intended to be a barrier, but rather a way to maintain a focused, professional, and supportive community. Once reviewed, applicants will be contacted with next steps and information on upcoming meetings and activities.
If you’re interested in learning, contributing, and being part of a collaborative professional community, we’d be glad to have you consider joining us.
