In a lot of third world countries (Indonesia, Brasil, Thailand…) there is a major problem with the disposal of coconuts shells after use. They are left untouched causing visually unpleasant sites, pollution, and indirectly diseases.
These diseases occur as a result of the still water in the coconut shells attracting insects, primarily mosquitos, which transmit these diseases and subsequently disseminate them in these local communities, causing instability and health concerns.
Our objective is to reduce these detrimental effects on the environment and the population by changing the method of removing the coconut shells. We are aware that this is a worldwide problem, but we are going to start on Sulawesi, an Indonesian island located in the east of Borneo.
The traditional way to get rid of the shells in there was, local farmers would use an open burning method, which emits significant amounts of Co2 into the atmosphere, harming the ozone layer and contributing to the greenhouse effect, which is one of the most threatening global environmental problems.
We can change this process to a cleaner and more green method by gathering coconut shells, with the help of local residents, by establishing coconut shell banks similar to recycling bins that we would later collect and recycle.
We would then transport them to our warehouse and transform them into a compound/fertilizer that could ultimately be sold to farmers.
As a side business, we will also have some coconut husk made products like bowls, tote bags, utensils and fashion accessories, for those who believe in a more sustainable life like CoFibre!
