In June of 2023, I retired after 26 years of teaching at the middle and high school levels. However, about two weeks into retirement, I realized I wasn't entirely ready to walk away from teaching. I began contemplating how I could continue using my teaching experience in a fun and beneficial way for students.
Introducing 'Coding for Middle Schoolers' a short course that utilizes an online coding program. Students will design and create video games playable on desktops, laptops, phones, or tablets. We'll take a step-by-step journey through creating a video game similar to Super Mario Brothers. Students will unleash their creativity in crafting characters, enemies, collectibles, and the game world. By the end of the course, they'll possess the skills to create almost any type of video game they can imagine.
After the success of our first classes, we created a second course – 'Coding for Middle Schoolers: The Sequel.' In this course, we'll collaboratively build an Adventure-type game. Students will navigate challenges, avoid monsters, solve puzzles, and collect objects to progress through various game levels/worlds. We have run multiple successful programs in Mount Horeb, Middleton, Sun Prairie and Fitchburg.
Please contact me or your local recreation department for details on enrollment and how to embark on this coding adventure with us!
Our goal is to help students learn how to create their own games using a completely online visual game creator. This class is designed for middle school aged students who may have experience creating games using programs like Scratch, Blockly, or Code.org. Having fun, being creative, and group problem solving will be part of every class. The only real requirement for this class is the desire to learn.
Each student will create their own game using one of our Chromebooks. Students will create a Flowlab.io account for our class and will have access to their games during and after our course.
Kids can share their progress with families/friends throughout the week.

Welcome to my Demo Game. There are Four Levels to complete.
You must collect 10 PuentCoins from each level to move on to the Next Level.
Watch out for Spikes, Monsters, and Aliens!
Use the left and right arrows to move and the up arrow or spacebar to jump!
This is a Demo game for our second class. Use the arrow keys to move and the space bar to use your sword to destroy monsters. Collect all of the keys on each level to advance - there are some puzzles you may need to solve to find all of the keys!
