Adjunct Committee Appointments
How does an adjunct serve as a Senate committee representative?
You can be appointed to one or more committees.
You will be paid as an appointed adjunct for attending and for any required outside work.
You will be paid at the Support Activities rate.
Appointed adjuncts are voting members in their committee, and therefore have power to affect change in the college.
Being on a committee will help your professional development and career. Add it to your CV / Resume
Apply for committees that you are interested in and can physically attend regularly.
Attendance will be public and in-person on the Palm Desert campus, as defined by the Brown Act.
You may attend via Zoom from the Indio Conference room on the 2nd floor. You must attend in a public, COD location.

Below you will find a description of each committee, what they do, and what your responsibilities are as an appointed adjunct.
Curriculum
Mission:
Serves as primary recommending body on matters relating to curriculum.
Goals & Objectives:
maintain the integrity and the quality of the District curriculum
secure curriculum consistency and balance
ensure transferability of courses where appropriate
play a progressive and proactive role in curriculum development
promote critical thinking
encourage a multicultural and global approach to education
respond to the educational needs of the community
Meetings:
Committee Meetings are on the 1st Tuesday and 3rd Thursdays of the month from 12:30PM - 1:50PM during the Academic Year, unless during spring break or holiday, in the Berger Faculty Innovation Center (BFIC) LA11.

Educational Technologies and Distance Ed.
Mission:
As a standing committee of the Academic Senate, the Educational Technologies Committee is the primary recommending body on matters of educational technologies.
Goals and Objectives:
The committee will address the evolving technology needs of College of the Desert in a variety of areas related to the use of technology for instructional purposes.
Advising and making recommendations to the Academic Senate, academic departments, and faculty in general regarding the following:
The committee will be the recommending body for procedures, systems and purchases that relate to distance education and technology used for teaching and learning.
Work cooperatively with other pertinent committees in developing and implementing faculty development activities for the use of instructional technology.
Identify potential needs for technology as they relate to instruction.
Develop a list of recommendations for purchases and utilization of technology as it relates to instruction.
Serving as a resource to Information Technology Services and the Administration on issues pertaining to technology as they relate to faculty and instruction, including accessibility.
Work cooperatively with administration and the bargaining units as appropriate in the recommendation and development of policies related to COD Distance Education.
Work cooperatively with IT in evaluation of technology, planning, purchasing, and support.
Work cooperatively with IT in developing and maintaining a comprehensive Technology Master Plan.
Overseeing the work of the Distance Ed Subcommittee.
Advising the Instructional Design coordinator.
Meetings:
1st Thursdays during college hour 12:30 - 1:50 at Berger Faculty Innovation Center LA11 during Academic Year unless during spring break or holiday.
Meetings may be video conferenced, noticed in advance.
Subcommittees: Distance Education Meets 1st Fridays 10-12, Zoom or LA11.
Faculty Development
Mission
With a continuing goal of fostering student engagement and success, our mission is to provide faculty with activities and experiences that translate into successful learning for our diverse student population.
Goals and Objectives
In order to support such an environment, the Faculty Development Committee is charged with:
Designing the FLEXIBLE Calendar Schedule, promoting professional development activities;
Overseeing the distribution of the Academic Enrichment Fund;
Assisting in the distribution of Basic Skills Initiative (BSI), Student Equity (Equity), and Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) funds.
Products
Approve Academic Enrichment Fund requests;
Recommend BSI, Equity, and SSSP Fund requests for approval by the appropriate office
Produce Flexible Calendar Schedule
Approve professional development activities for FLEX credit
Approve Faculty Professional Advancement Plans
Approve Sabbatical Applications to be forwarded to the Superintendent/President

Meeting Schedule
The Faculty Development Committee meets on the first Thursday of the month at 12:30 p.m.
When the campus fully reopens meetings will resume in KINE 103 during the Academic Year unless during spring break or holiday.

Outcomes and Assessments
Mission:
The Outcomes and Assessment Committee’s mission is to ensure that the college goes through an ongoing, systematic process that clarifies and improves achievement of learning outcomes at every level from institutional, program, degree, certificate, and course with specific emphasis on student success. The Outcomes and Assessment Committee works with faculty and staff to ensure the methods of assessment of institutional learning outcomes, program learning outcomes, and course student learning outcomes are aligned and consistent across the college.
Goals and Objectives:
Goals for Program Review include establishment of a Program Review validation process, a PR workshop to assist faculty in preparing an excellent and effective Program Review, and review of the PR process and generation of suggestions for improvement.
Goals for Program Review Update include review of the process to determine if it is effective and consultation with the Planning Council to confirm relevancy to the process.

Educational Policies and Practices
Mission:
Serves as the primary recommending body on educational issues relating to students, such as academic standards, grading, assessment and matriculation, calendar, and enrollment management.
Goals and Objectives:
Adopt and revise educational policies and practices to fulfill the needs of our students, faculty and administration.
Respond to the educational needs of the community.
Ascertain legality of educational polices and practices.
Support policies and practices that promote student access and growth.
Ensure consistency and fairness among policies and practices.

Adjunct Subcommittee
All Appointed adjuncts in the 5 main Senate committees will be also be members of the Adjunct Subcommittee. Here we can have an open dialogue with other adjuncts and help make more informed decisions in our committees. This will also be open the whole campus community and be a place for all adjuncts to give input and for us to give out information to other adjuncts.
Roll
The Adjunct Subcommittee is a standing subcommittee of the Academic Senate. This Committee reviews and informs on Academic Senate issues related to or affecting adjunct faculty.
Products
Orientation and education about responsibilities for adjuncts appointed to and / or serving in the Academic Senate and their respective committees.
Efficient dissemination of current Academic Senate issues and information, especially those relevant to adjuncts
Open communication between adjuncts appointed to Senate committees, the adjunct faculty, and adjunct Academic Senate representatives.
Discussion of adjunct concerns appropriate for the Academic Senate relating to 10+1.
Discussion of current state and local Senate resolutions
Recommendations that support professional growth of adjunct faculty related to Academic Senate topics.

Adjunct Responsibilities and Pay
Adjunct Responsibilities:
Voting - Your voice actually counts in these committees. When appointed, you are a voting member. There is one adjunct vote per committee
You will recieve the meeting agenda a few days before the meeting. Please, check your COD email, and READ the agenda. This should take less than 5 minutes.
Meeting procedure - It is a good idea to understand the Brown Act, as it is state law that most of our committee meetings must follow.
Attendance - When you arrive at a meeting, please sign in. This will be proof of your attendance.
Attendance will be in-person on the Palm Desert Campus, or via Zoom from the 2nd floor Conference Room in Indio.
If you cannot make it to a meeting, please notify the adjunct alternate within reasonable time so that he or she can attend and be paid appropriately.
Hours and Pay:
Pay rate: Adjunct appointees for these committee will be paid. You will be paid at your appropriate Support Activities rate.
Adjunct alternates: Adjunct alternate will be paid only if the appointed adjunct does not attend and the appointed alternate is taking their place.
Payroll Form: You must maintain a record of your hours and turn it in to payroll on your own. If the committee requires that you do work or other assignments outside of the designated meeting times, you can record those hours as well. This is very common for the Curriculum Committee.
