Hello COAP friends,
Our first online video meeting went so well that we’re going to have another one in September. The feedback we received on the scheduling indicated that folks preferred to meet on the second Tuesday of the month, so we’re scheduling our next meeting for Tuesday, September 8th at 7pm. We will e-mail you a reminder one week before the meeting with the connection details.
We hope to see you at our next meeting, and we wish you the best on your journey caring for your parents.

Hello COAP friends!
Watch your e-mail for details about our Tuesday, August 11th Zoom meeting at 7pm. This will be a test to gauge the interest our members may have in attending online COAP meetings. Since our regular meeting location at White’s Chapel is unavailable, we thought having an online meeting might offer some help to our COAP members. If there’s enough interest, we will schedule a recurring meeting at the same time as our previous in-person meetings, which is the first Tuesday of the month at 7pm.
See you soon!

Dear C.O.A.P. Friends,
We have been speaking lately with many of you and the situations you are facing during this extraordinary time. Whatever new situations you are facing we have seen you be tireless advocates for your parents and now you are being asked to do even more. Some cannot be with their parent(s) to reassure and comfort. Some are having to bath, dress and care for them in their homes because health care workers can can't come in to the home and some can't even have the home visits from hospice. Please know we are thinking of you and the new level of care and advocacy you are giving. Let us know how you are doing and check for updates. Bless you all.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has presented a unique threat to older adults. To provide guidance and updated information on how to work and care for our most vulnerable patients, clients, staff, as well as our own older family members, in this unprecedented epidemic, the two Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Programs (GWEPs) in Texas (South East Texas GWEP at Baylor College of Medicine and the Workforce Enhancement Healthy Aging and Independent Living GWEP at the University of North Texas) are joining together with our partners to host a statewide virtual town hall to answer your questions. Funded by the Health Resources Services Administration, the GWEPs are regional training programs comprised of inter-professional experts in geriatric care to improve health care outcomes and maximize patient and family engagement in settings that serve older adults. Following a successful Town Hall on April 1st, the GWEPs are back again to offer updated information, more resources and extended guidance. Whether you’re interested in resources to manage the anxiety and stress of social isolation, guidance on how transmission risk may change as communities reopen, or just straight talk on the COVID-19 situation,... the Texas Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Programs are here to help.
Submit questions HERE to help us develop content that matters to YOU. GWEP clinicians will answer your questions and discuss topics such as:
· Updated information on the coronavirus and the risk to older adults
· Resources to manage the anxiety and stress of social isolation
· Practical advice on getting back to work safely
· How to take infection control precautions as communities reopen
· Supporting your clients, staff and older family members to navigate their own health, safety & sanity

Here's a helpful Emergency Medical Information Form from lifeseniorservices.org:

Dear COAP Members,
We've been thinking of you knowing this must be an exceptionally trying time for you. You are all such wonderful advocates for your parent(s) we wanted to know how things were going for you. We have a few questions to try and understand where you are with this amazing detour on the journey in caring for your parents.
1. If your parent(s) are in a facility are you experiencing any restrictions in visiting or being in contact with them?
2. Is your parent aware of what's going on and are you having to deal with their fears?
3. Is the facility voicing concerns about having face masks? I don't know whether we could link up but I know of several cottage groups of retired nurses who are sewing masks for nursing homes.
Perhaps your responses will help another member. We miss seeing you but having all cared for our parents we can only imagine how this extra wrinkle adds to your caregiving.
Take care.
