WHAT IS ON-BOARDING?

Onboarding process aims to welcome you to College of Alameda ESOL program by helping you choose classes based on your level. We offer ESOL courses in 4 different levels, Guided Self Placement will help you choose the one that is the most appropriate for your language proficiency.

The purpose of the Self-Guided Placement tool is to help students identify their ESOL level and choose the correct classes in the ESOL Department at College of Alameda. Students should do their best on the tool.

It is not important for students to get the highest score on the tool rather the purpose of this tool is to help students choose the right classes.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?

To assist you in selecting the ESOL courses that are most appropriate for you, we suggest following these steps:

Look at the ESOL courses

Apply to College of Alameda (https://bit.ly/3shYqAs ). In your application, make sure to answer “YES” on the supplemental question that asks “I want to take English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes AND I do not have a U.S. High School Diploma

Log in to your Student Campus Solutions (sa.peralta.edu) and complete the ESOL Self-Placement. You will be directed to take the GSP before you are able to enroll in any classes.

After completing steps 1 through 6 of the GSP, you will see a list of available classes for your level (Grammar, Listening & Speaking, Reading & Writing). You may then select which courses you would like to enroll into.

After selecting your courses, you will automatically be enrolled and see a “Enrollment Successful” note (or see an error message) after clicking the "proceed for enrollment” button (there's no additional checkout page).

If a class is full, you will need to go to "manage classes" to get on the waitlist.

Make an appointment with a counselor to review the ESOL classes you selected, go over other additional ESOL support classes that are available, and plan out your academic year.

To schedule an in-person, video, or telephone appointment with counselor please call  (510) 748-5207 or visit COA’s counseling webpage: https://alameda.edu/students/counseling/
