How Coaching Helps
Coaches evoke awareness as they develop trust through conversation that addresses the goals of the client. In many situations, it is a process of moving from being stuck to unstuck. Coaches listen actively, and repeat concepts and themes observed in an engaging manner. They pay attention to emotions, and ask questions based on what is said, while drawing from within as well as past interaction.
There are no wrong answers in coaching. Coaching gives clients “guardrails” in their thought process as they help individuals deepen their learning and make choices toward their desired activities. People seek coaches if they have unmet goals, and want to learn about themselves and the things they are not achieving. They also turn to coaches if they aren’t sure of questions they could be asking in their search to live lives that are full and complete.
Coaching is the newest option in the helping professions. While engaging with clients to achieve the client’s goals, no solutions are offered, believing that people are creative, resourceful and whole. Too often, people think that they are “not enough”. Coaches help people see that they are loved, are worthy and are definitely “enough”.
The International Coaching Federation defines coaching as, “is the process of a highly trained individual coming alongside and journeying with clients in a safe, confidential client-based, thought-provoking, creative process. Through coaching, people can maximize their personal and professional potential in order to grow toward their short-term and long-range goals through action and commitment”.
Coaching is not about perceived “experts” directing from their experience, but partners who can help people find their way toward a more fulfilling life. Through powerful questions and reframing perspectives, clients develop the courage to take risks through expanded possibilities. Coaching is about learning, not fixing. It is an experience of thinking bigger and discovering potential options as they move toward new activities and responsibilities.
