Coarse-grained description for non-equilibrium system and transport phenomena
The project concerns a wide investigation of problems in the field of non-equilibrium and non-standard statistical mechanics, with focus on 5 research lines:
1- generalised thermodynamics;
2- long-range interactions;
3- granular matter;
4- transport of biopolymers;
5- active matter and critical fluctuations.
All these topics share some similar features, not easily captured by the usual statistical mechanics framework, e.g. large non-Gaussian fluctuations, non-equilibrium currents, complex spatio-temporal patterns. The treatment of these issues requires new technical and numerical tools. The project general aim is the development of an effective coarse-grained description for the relevant collective variables. We pursue the comprehension of fundamental mechanisms, which is expected to provide a refinement of several advanced technologies.
