Volunteer recruitment: Join Our Unique Renovation Project in Nara's Historic Heartland

About the project

This project involves the renovation of a 140+ year old traditional Japanese house located along Yamanobe-no-michi, the oldest road in Japan. The house is not just a residence, but a piece of history located beside an important heritage site related to the genealogy of Emperor Suiko in 6th century.

The wish of the locals to restore the charm of this once-forgotten house has inspired our collective efforts, and after two years of diligent preparation and team building, we are well on our way to embarking on the rennovation project in April 2024.

Nishiyama-zuka Tomb and the Area

Nishiyama-zuka tomb is located near Tenri Station, along the Yamanobe-no-michi road, and offers a spectacular view of the mountains of Yamato. The area has many paths to shrines and temples and is rich in history. There are also stands selling local fruits and vegetables. By participating in this project, one can experience the deep history of Japan and participate in meaningful community activities.

About the renovation:

The site we're working on is about 700m² with 7 buildings, including the main house, a guest house, and some storehouses. One of these storehouses is being used as a folk craft store right now. We want to turn the whole place into a special lodging area, close to an ancient burial mound, where guests can enjoy local food, sake, and herbs.

The construction is led by "TEAM Clapton," which engages in manufacturing with the involvement of the client under the theme of "Do it Together (DIT)" . We would like to work on the creation of a participatory community starting with the renovation.

Renovation site: 700m2 (200 tsubo), 7 buildings (main house, detached house, 3 warehouses, 1 storehouse)
