Dr. Sunny for Onondaga County

Podcast on mental health, working with underserved

My name is Sunny Aslam and I am dedicated to building a stronger Onondaga County! We have some of the worst poverty in the country, including the worst child, black and brown poverty in the USA.  I'm bringing my energy and experience serving on the frontlines in our community and fresh ideas to attack the crippling poverty in both rural and urban corners of the county.

I'm an  addiction psychiatrist who lives in Jamesville, NY. I've been a leader all my life, fighting poverty, pushing for greater health care access and collaborating with poor and working class families.  I was named the top physician in CNY in 2018, honored by the county medical society for Physician Service to the community in 2019 and earned the  SUNY Upstate Leonard Tow Humanism award in 2020 for clinical excellence and outstanding compassion in the delivery of care.

I spend my week providing and teaching addiction and mental health treatment.  The rest of the week I spend with my two daughters and connecting with various poverty, health and activist groups in the community. I'm on the executive board of the Onondaga County Medical Society, work with the Syracuse chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby, am a consultant to NAMI-Syracuse.

We need to organize for change. Together we can build a stronger county!
