Who We Are

CNY Gallowglass Society is for all people interested in learning basket-hilted broadsword fencing interpreted from historic sources, primarily within the kingdoms of Scotland, Ireland, and England.

The club also provides opportunities to promote Scottish broadsword to the public — we attend tournaments around the region and provide public demonstrations at two local Celtic festivals each year.

What We Study

Our curriculum draws on three foundational treatises:

• The Use of the Broad Sword (1746) — Thomas Page

• Highland Broadsword (1799) — Henry Angelo

• The Art of Defence on Foot with Broad Sword and Saber (1798) — Charles Roworth

Training & Schedule

• Fridays, 7:00–9:00 PM — Training

• Sundays, 10:00 AM–12:30 PM — Sparring

Looking for an alternative way to enjoy physical fitness? Your first class is free. Wear athletic clothing. Classes are $10 per session for insurance.

New to sword work? Beginners are welcome! Ages 16+

Beginner Gear

A 350N HEMA/fencing mask is the best first purchase. The club maintains loaner gear for class, so you can start training before buying a full kit.

Inclusivity

All races, creeds, and backgrounds are welcome. We welcome everyone to study the sword with us — as long as it's done with safety, respect, and control.

Public Outreach

Beyond regular training, we represent Scottish broadsword at regional tournaments and perform at two local Celtic festivals every year.
