Deep Vision

The goal of the research in CNS lab is to develop a simplified brain model. Particularly the team ‘Deep Vision’ focuses on understanding of the brain function in encoding and processing the visual information. The projects designed by the team elucidate the functional role of lateral interactions in different aspects of visual perception such as motion processing, development of functional maps and attention based visual object recognition. We have shown that asymmetric lateral weight connections developed during learning can plays a role in developing direction selectivity map in primary visual cortex (V1) and pattern selectivity map in Middle temporal (MT). We developed a hierarchical neural field model that can recognize the type of optic flow present in the given dot sequence. We also showed that the above hierarchical model can be generalized to to explain higher order phenomena such as structure from motion and biological motion.
