For this study, children may be eligible to participate if they fit one of the following criteria:
(1) Children with an ASD diagnosis, or strongly suspected ASD diagnosis
(2) Full Biological Siblings of children with an ASD diagnosis (but who do not have ASD themselves)
(3) Children without an ASD diagnosis or a first-degree biological relative with ASD
Children must be between the ages of 8-12 years old in order to participate in this research study. Participants can be of any gender, sex, race, or ethnicity.
Since we are measuring brain function in this study, taking some medications that impact brain function (e.g. anti-psychotics) can be exclusionary. For this reason, our study team may ask you about current medications your child is taking to determine eligibility.
Children with a recent history of seizures or epilepsy diagnosis may also not be eligible to participate in this study.
EEG is a very useful research tool that allows us to learn a lot about the brain in a very non-invasive way, but it has some limitations. For example, to get a good measure of brain activity, it's important that the EEG cap fits snug on one's head and that hair lies mostly flat under the cap. For this reason, hair styles such as dreadlocks or braids, or children with very thick hair may not be able to participate in this study.
