WRITING CENTER
The College of Lake County Writing Center offers writing support in four different modalities—In-Person, Zoom, Live Chat in Google Docs, and Written Feedback. In-person sessions are available on all three campuses, and thanks to our virtual options, CLC now offers sessions seven days a week! The writing center is especially useful for students who are struggling with the outlining process. For this reason, an assignment requiring all students to visit the tutoring center for outlining support is part of this course. For information, please head to the CLC Writing Center blog by clicking the tab to the left. Appointments with the writing center can be scheduled in Navigate.
CANVAS
I will only accept .PDF files or text uploads for written work. Do not include a link as a comment as opposed to uploading one of the acceptable file types.
Canvas does NOT accept: Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, OneDrive, MS Live files or iCloud files. Also, NO Mac files (.pages, .key).
As a faculty member I have no school Gmail, Google share, Google docs or Google Slides.
When directed, use Canvas to upload assignments and take quizzes/exams.
If your work is not in by the time indicated as the due date and time on the syllabus, it is late. Please refer to the late policy for specific details regarding late work.
TECHNOLOGY & TECHNICAL ISSUES
A broken computer or printer doesn’t have to slow you down! If you run into tech troubles, reach out to the college help desk—they might be able to assist you with hardware or software issues. Plus, don’t forget that the College Library offers free access to computers and printers.
If you're having any technical issues, no worries—just reach out to the experts! For help with sign-on issues or anything related to Canvas, please call the 24-hour CLC tech support line at 847-543-4357. And for any problems with McGraw Hill/Connect, give their support team a call at 800-331-5094. They’re there to help you out anytime!
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
If you have a documented disability and need academic accommodations, such as extended time for exams or an in-class note taker, please contact the Access and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) in B171 at the Grayslake campus. You can reach them at (847) 543-2474 or ADRC@clcillinois.edu. More information is available on their website by clicking on the button to the right.
If you already have your Faculty Notification Letter from the ADRC, please schedule a time to meet with me to discuss your needs. I cannot make any accommodations until we have had this meeting and I have received your notification letter.
Don’t wait to establish your documentation. Even if you think you may not need it, take the time to set it up so there is no delay in the event you do. This ensures you’re prepared for any situation that might arise during the semester.
COUNSELING SERVICES
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is here to support you with free, confidential therapy services, available both in-person and virtually via Zoom. Taking care of your mental health is important, so don’t hesitate to reach out. To learn more or to set up an appointment with a licensed mental health professional, call (847) 543-2032.
I encourage all students to take advantage of this invaluable resource. Counseling can benefit everyone for a variety of reasons—you don’t have to be in crisis or experiencing extreme hardship to seek help.
If you experience a crisis or emergency outside of regular business hours, call the same number (847) 543-2032, press #1 for "Crisis," and follow the prompts. When you reach the operator, request an after-hours "CYN" crisis worker to be paged. Please be aware that the operator is with the local police department dispatch center and their role is simply to connect you with the crisis worker.
SAFE SPACE/BRAVE SPACE
The term “Safe Space” means that LGBTQIA+ students should feel encouraged, welcomed, and accepted by myself and fellow classmates. “Brave Space” extends this idea to include everyone, fostering an environment where all students feel confident sharing their voices and perspectives in a tolerant and understanding class.
Our class thrives when we can trust and share our lives with one another, creating a supportive and open atmosphere. Any language that is homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, ableist, classist, or otherwise discriminatory will not be tolerated. I am committed to raising awareness about microaggressions and subtle forms of discrimination so that we can collectively grow beyond harmful habits.
In a Brave Space, self-care and accommodations are essential when facing mental and emotional challenges. Please inform me of any difficulties you are experiencing so we can work together to meet course requirements and provide you with the necessary support and space.
CHOSEN NAMES & PERSONAL PRONOUNS
Everyone has the right to be addressed by the name and pronouns that align with their gender identity, including non-binary pronouns like they/them/theirs or ze/zir/zirs. Since rosters don’t list gender or pronouns, you may be asked to share the pronouns you use to avoid assumptions based on your name or appearance. You are not obligated to share, but if you use a chosen name, please inform me. Chosen names and pronouns must be respected in the classroom.
Mistakes may happen, so let's maintain an environment open to correction and learning. However, repeated disrespectful or antagonistic comments towards those who have indicated their pronouns or chosen name will not be tolerated. Names and pronouns can evolve, so if you wish to be addressed differently at any point during the semester, please let me know.
RELIGIOUS OBSERVATIONS
Any student unable to attend classes or participate in any examination, study, or work requirement due to their religious beliefs will be excused from those activities and provided with an opportunity to make up the missed work. Students must notify the instructor well in advance of any anticipated absences or conflicts between a scheduled class and a religious observance. No fees will be charged for providing this accommodation, and no adverse effects will result from taking advantage of these provisions.
FERPA & TITLE IX
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) gives students certain rights with respect to their education records. Refer to the CLC catalog for complete details.
The College of Lake County seeks to provide an environment free of bias, discrimination, and harassment. If you have been the victim of sexual harassment/misconduct/assault, we encourage you to report this. If you report this to a faculty member, they must notify our college's Title IX coordinator about the basic facts of the incident.
