The Create Make Learn Summer Institute provides a buffet of workshop and activities throughout the week to help you build a personal learning plan for the week.
Feedback from 6 years of Create Make Learn attendees helps us to organize workshop topics by strands! You will be start with the strand that best meets your goal, but may use workshops in other strand to build your personal learning plan. We model personalized learning practices and provide several opportunities to reflect on and revise your goals and workshop selection each day. Participants will create a learning portfolio that demonstrates growth and proficiency document in multiple domains.
When you register for Create Make Learn Summer Institute, we'll ask you to pick the strand that best matches your goals and skill level.
Our strands are guidelines for a scaffolded approach to learning. Full-week participants are welcome to customize their learning, choosing from a variety of sessions offered, engaging in individual learning using CML resources and/or individual/group project time. We strive to model personalized learning.
New this year and designed especially for teachers who work with students in Pre-K - Grade 3. Your strand leaders have years of experience with this age group and will engage you in age appropriate activities that you can use with your little ones. Create with Paper, Cardboard and Recycled Materials. Invent with LittleBits. Use squishy circuits to control motors and sound. Code one of our many friendly robots from BeeBots to Spheros. Experience Design Thinking and S.T.E.A.M Challenges for Pre-K to Grades 2 students.
For educators who are new to making and looking to add S.T.E.A.M. to their classroom.
Our experienced team will challenge you and scaffold your learning in ways that will help you gain creative confidence as you learn brand new skills. You'll learn maker skills and facilitation techniques and walk away with examples and ideas of how to apply this to your curriculum. Create with circuits. Invent with LittleBits. Try squishy or paper circuits. Add motors and sound. Hack an old toy into something new. Create with Cardboard. Code a friendly robot.
This strand is perfect for participants with some experience who would like to grow their confidence with old favorite and and new tools. Choose from a variety of skill building workshops or experience learning through student-directed projects. Experience Creative & Practical Problem Solving with Circuits, Coding, Cardboard, Robots, Intro to 3D printers, Laser Cutters, Vinyl Cutters and Hand Tools. Create with Soft Circuits, Paper Circuits, eTextiles, Makey Makeys, MicroBits. Apply Design Thinking to STEAM Challenges for Upper Elementary, Middle School or High School students. Growing your skills and your maker mindset can prepare you to support student passion projects in your school.
This strand is for educators with previous experience in making who want to challenge themselves to learn new skills and take their projects to the next level. Experienced maker educators and mentors will offer workshops in designing and prototyping with fabrication tools such as 3D printers, CNC, and Laser Cutters to empower you to meet new goals in creating and making. We'll have special topics workshops and labs where you can learn to code circuits, play with Raspberry Pi and ATTiny Arduino and even experience the Internet of Things. Learners in the advanced skill will work with our team prior to the institute to set new goals, identify a passion project. You'll document you'll learning and reflect on your growth through a maker portfolio as a model for new assessment practices that can be used with your students.

The pace of an intensive bootcamp makes them most appropriate for those with some experience in making. Boot Camps will provide you with foundational skills necessary to dive into your first hands on project.
Participants new to making or looking for a more scaffolded approach to build their confidence should consider enrolling in week-long Strands 1, 2, or 3.
Participants in Strand 4 (Grow Your Maker Skills) or Strand 5 (Advance Your Maker Skills) may choose Bootcamp sessions as part of their strand for no additional cost.
