JOIN CMC FOR A FREE 200-KM LONG RIDE ON THE WEEKEND OF THE DOUBLE CENTURY
For Cape Multisport Club the DC weekend is always a highlight on our calendar. While we wait with baited breath for any announcement from PPA around the event, we realize that even if the event goes ahead it will likely not be at the scale of last year and taking the usual three teams (minimum) our club has done for the past number of years will not be possible.
Enter Plan B
1 - Plot an awesome 200km route closer to home.
2 - Invite club members, friends and all other cycling enthusiasts to use this route for their Saturday morning group rides.
3 - Form teams of 8-12 riders.
4 - Ride the 200-odd km on the weekend of the Double Century.
5 - Have fun - Easy!
We really want to keep it as simple as that.
Our partners, the timing gurus at Uwe Koetter, will help out with getting your rides times up on our website, so you can even see how your team did against the rest.
NOTE - this is not a race, or an event. This is a self-supported and self-navigated group ride (in small groups). Please treat it as such.
We initially planned to follow the route used for the inaugural Double Century - a challenging circle route through the Boland and Breedevalley that incorporates two major passes, as well as numerous little drags. Don't discount the possibility of wind around Villiersdorp, Worcester and Slankhoek either!
Read about it here: https://doublecentury.co.za/about-double-century/heritage-and-history/
The roadworks on Bainskloof did force us to adjust the route - substituting Du Toitskloof on the return leg. At the moment it is simply not possible for a group to ride Bains safely.

Most of the "rules" below are a variation of "SAFETY FIRST". This is a morning group ride, so it's not worth getting hurt (or worse) over.
The ride is open to all - we welcome all club members and any other teams / clubs / rider who are keen to join us (it's public roads anyway!) - the more the merrier.
The ride is free to join - again, it's public roads. If you do feel like making a contribution to our club, please reach out to us on cycling@capemultispotclub.com. We will also suggest some charity organizations at the bottom of this page you can donate to in lieu of an "entry fee" if you want to (to be updated soon) - but no obligations.
Support vehicles are not mandatory, but still a good idea. CMC will be providing a few support vehicles for our club's teams.
This is a self-navigated, self-supported ride. It's not an organized event. It is a longer than usual weekend group ride, so CMC club is sharing some of the logistical planning to make your life easier.
Respect the rules of the road. This can't be stressed enough. Ride safe, ride clever, respect each other and other road users. Simple.
Helmets are mandatory (do we even need to say this?).
Stay within the yellow line.
Don't ride more than two abreast.
Make sure it is safe before passing other riders / teams.
If you are passed by other riders / teams, slack off a bit to let them pass faster. Now is not the time to grow an ego and fight them off. They caught you, they are stronger, deal with it.
To make things interesting, Uwe Koetter will manage the timing of your rides using Strava.
Step1: Team captains can register their teams here:
https://cmc.uwekoetter.com/register/dc_challenge/team_registration/
Step2: Team members can sign up for their teams and link their Strava accounts to Uwe Koetter's system here:
https://cmc.uwekoetter.com/register/dc_challenge/rider_registration/
Teams consists of 8-12 riders.
For teams of 8 or less riders, the finish time of the fourth rider will be used for the team's time on our leader-board.
For teams of 9 or 10 riders, the finish time of the fifth rider will be used for the team's time on our leader-board.
For teams of 11 or 12 riders, the finish time of the sixth rider will be used for the team's time on our leader-board.
You have 30 minutes at the neutral zone. We will add any additional time taken here to your finish time.
Since we are using Strava segments for timing, you will need to follow the routes exactly to make sure your ride matches the required Strava segments.
Results will be published on cmc.uwekoetter.com.
Start the ride any time from 06:00 on Saturday 21 November 2020
Complete the ride any time before 15:00 on Sunday 22 November 2020
Don't worry - we will try to match you up with a team. Simply use the "Please assign me to a team" option in Step2 (you can skip Step1)
or drop us a mail at cycling@capemultisportclub.com, tell us what your preferred type of team is (sub6/7/8 DC, Mixed, Mens, Ladies, etc) and we'll try to match you up with one of our teams.

If you are meeting your own support vehicle at another location, please take extra care to park well away from the road where you will not block traffic, force other riders into traffic, or impair the visibility of riders or other vehicles using the road.
Please do not follow your teams all the way - you will cause havoc in traffic.
We initiated a training program for both DC and 36One Mtb challenge early in September. The basic weekly structure includes two High Intensity Interval Sessions sessions along with plenty of base miles. The first part of the program will focus on building threshold power, while the latter part will focus on sustaining power for long efforts.
We integrated a schedule of CMC club rides which we encourage participants to attend. Everyone is welcome to attend these rides.
If you want to be included in the training program, please reach out to Cobus cobuspotg@gmail.com
