Useful Tips

1. Tips

Tips are not necessary in Japan. In particular, you do not need to pay tips for taxi, restaurant, and hotel services. (Meanwhile, not so often but in some situations, what they call service charge may be automatically included in the price. Then you need to pay it.)

2. IC card for transportation

The main transportation in Kyoto is buses, subways, and trains. To ride them, it is extremely convenient to have a prepaid/rechargeable IC card such as ICOCA/Suica/manaca (sold in Osaka-Kyoto/Tokyo/Nagoya area, respectively). You can buy and recharge them at the JR train stations (not subway stations). You can use them for almost all trains/subways/buses in Japan except for Shinkansen.

3. Form Kansai International Airport to Kyoto

It is easy and fast to take the express train Haruka to Kyoto station.
