MARCH 2023

THE MAIN EVENT

INVITE YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY!

Saturday, March 11, 2023

11:00 am - 6:00 pm

Boulder County Fairground Exhibit Building

Don't miss the annual Boulder County 4-H Family Carnival!  This annual fundraiser will feature more than 25 booths of low-cost, family-friendly games, concessions, small prizes, and a silent auction.  Individual booths are organized and staffed by local youth from area Boulder County 4-H Clubs and will include wholesome, fan-favorite games like a bounce house, ring toss, roping booth, and more.

No advance registration is needed, and entry is free.  Upon arrival, families will have the opportunity to purchase tickets that are then used to participate in the various activities.  The public is encouraged to attend, as all proceeds from the events support local 4-H youth programming.

4-H is the nation’s largest youth development and empowerment organization. Fueled by the research-based, university-backed curriculum, 4-H members engage in hands-on learning in the areas of science, healthy living, and food safety.

Boulder County 4-H has 25 clubs with more than 500 members and 200 volunteers providing a unique environment where youth can try new things, make new friends, and discover new possibilities. Through 4-H, children explore leadership, teamwork, citizenship, and community service. The values and skills that youth gain as a 4-Her will help them become their best selves today and in the future.

Please help us spread the word. Feel free to share our Facebook Event page!

Boulder County, Colo. - Boulder County residents ages 14-17 have until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, March 31, to apply for summer jobs with the Boulder County Youth Corps.

The Boulder County Youth Corps program staff is excited to return to the field for the 2023 season! Teens and adults have the opportunity to positively impact the Boulder County community this summer.

Teams will work 30 hours per week, Monday through Thursday, from June 12 to Aug. 2 on a variety of conservation and stewardship projects including trail construction and maintenance, historic preservation, forest thinning, construction and repair of fencing, landscaping, and removal of noxious weeds.

NEW! Affinity Crews

The Boulder County Youth Corps believes diversity is a key source of strength for our communities and we strive to create a safe and empowering environment for participants from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities. A key element of our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is fielding single-identity affinity crews to support communities historically underserved in the outdoor space. This year, we will field two affinity crews, an All Girls Crew and a LGBTQ+ Crew. Affinity crews will work on typical Youth Corps projects side-by-side with Corpsmembers and Leaders who share in their identity.

QUICK REMINDER

Reminder:

If you have chosen the option, “I do not want my child’s picture to be used for promotional efforts” in the 4hOnline enrollment system, it is your responsibility to make sure that your child is not included when pictures are taken at 4-H club, county or state events.

It is a Boulder County 4-H policy to not use photographs of minors connected with their name or other identification. With more than 500 members and because more people are selecting this option, there is no way we can monitor the use of photographs if your child is in them.

As you may know, at times, we have a display board at the county fair with pictures of 4-H members and a PowerPoint at Achievement night of members involved in various activities and we like to include as many different youth as possible. We also will be sharing photos on social media. If your child is in a photograph on a 4-H club website, the web master will need to pull those pictures off of the site in order to meet your request. We understand there are some circumstances under which pictures should not be made available to the public, such as custodial issues and adoptions.

Just be aware, we are not able to monitor this, so please make sure your child is not included in any photos taken at 4-H activities.

FREE TOTE?

Hey 4-H Families! March is a great time to recruit and ask friends to join 4-H. Could you and your family use another reusable 4-H tote bag?  Stop by the office to get yours today! Then will you please share the word about how great 4-H is for you and your family?

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Critters & Creations 4-H Community Service Project

4-H club members sorted & categorized thousands of seeds for the Boulder Public Library on Feb 5th. We picked up multiple crates and boxes of seeds that were all mixed together. We divided them by category for vegetable, herb and flower, then sorted them further by name. Anyone may now stop by the Boulder Public Library to pick up free seeds to plant a complete vegetable garden, an herb garden or even a beautiful flower garden.

We really enjoyed sorting seeds for so many future gardens and can hardly wait to see the bounty of green coming up all over in Boulder County.

FOODS AND NUTRITION TIPS

Learning about being healthy in your 4-H foods and nutrition project is a great way to connect beyond your local knowledge.  Annually, the Environmental Working Group (EWG.org) analyzes USDA data to compile its famous Clean 15 and Dirty Dozen lists. These lists outline the fruits and veggies grown with the most (dirty) and least (clean) pesticide usage. Many avoid pesticides as a preventative practice and there is scientific evidence to support that, but instead of focusing on that, another point of consideration is what organic produce has more of. We can pick organic produce for less of the bad and/or for more of the good.

When a plant is growing in the wild and insects attack it, the plant recognizes that injury and produces more vitamins and phytochemicals to heal that wound and deter the insects from eating more. Those vitamins and phytochemicals are plant protection products. They are naturally occurring botanical-pesticides that are nutritive to us. Organic vegetables and fruit are higher in certain antioxidants, flavonoids, and phytochemicals than conventionally grown produce which has pesticide protection so doesn't have to make its own.

Don't let these lists discourage you from eating fruits and vegetables though, a conventionally grown strawberry with pesticide residue is still better for you than a strawberry-flavored gummy bear! Filling your plate with a variety of fresh fruits and veggies will always be a cornerstone of good nutrition.

Here are the top 3 items in the Clean 15 and Dirty Dozen lists (See the complete lists on https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/)

Denver Dog Show; Back At It Again

By: Alessia Daelli - 4x4 Dog Club Reporter

The Denver Dog Show was from February 17th to the 19th at the National Western Complex. It is Colorado’s largest dog show. This annual show was shut down for three years due to COVID-19. This year coming back strong, there were 1900 dogs and 200 different breeds. We were lucky to have several of our very own members participate in this show, Mandy Roth with Magic, her Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever; Willa Moeller with her terrier pup Winston; and Kyra Cone with her chocolate lab Gracie. New member Moira also attended with her Borzoi. An Afghan Hound took Best in Show, and an Irish Setter won the Junior Showmanship class.

AKC Junior Showmanship is a little bit different from 4-H Showmanship. At an AKC show you can show your purebred dog in a Conformation class and if you have a mixed breed and/or are under 18 you can also show your dog in the Junior Showmanship class. In 4-H you have to take a showmanship test about dog anatomy and traits but not in AKC. The 4-H judge also has a rubric in the ring that they score you off of, different from AKC where the judge picks the dog that was shown and handled the best. There are many differences from 4-H Showmanship and AKC Junior Showmanship but they are both still very fun and exciting!

LIVESTOCK

ANIMAL CARE AND HOUSING FORMS

Forms are now completed in 4-H Online; members must only submit a hard copy of the Animal Care and Housing form by the designated ownership date ONLY if they WILL NOT be housing the animals at the address listed in 4-H online. The hard copy forms must have all appropriate signatures.

If at any point in the year, a member houses their animals at a different address than listed in their 4-H online profile, they must submit another signed animal care and housing form to the Extension Office. Animal care and housing forms can be found at: Boulder County 4-H Enrollment Page

DAIRY STEER PROGRAM

Boulder County 4-H 2 year Dairy Steer Program (DSP)

The 4-H Dairy Cattle program is offering new classes. It promotes another side of the Dairy project. Learn how this project enters into our food chain other than with milk products.

The dairy sector contributed 5.6 billion pounds (21 percent) of beef to the U.S. commercial beef supply.  Since 2002, the percentage of dairy beef contribution to the total U.S. beef supply has ranged from 18 to 24 percent.

Dairy steers are well known for their ability to produce the highest quality grades of beef

(Prime and High Choice cuts).

See Additional information & rules also on county

web site

Did you know that you can also do the Dairy Cattle Project and learn all the aspects of the dairy industry without you ever having to milk her?

You can start with a calf and exhibit the same heifer for 2 years (2 fairs) by following the DHRP (Dairy Heifer Replacement Program) rules & guidelines. You will also have an opportunity to sell your heifer through the Livestock Sale once she’s bred (check the rules),  knowing that she will carry on in life as a producing cow. You could even apply to the Ag Youth Loan Program where you can purchase a calf for the 2yr program or you can purchase a bred yearling that you can sell at the 2023 fair. You must have possession & ownership by the last Thursday in April (animal ID deadline) along with turning in the DHRP nomination form to 4-H office. If the idea of selling a dairy heifer interests you, please check out the DHRP rules and guidelines especially prior to purchasing a new heifer for this program. For more information about these programs or on the Dairy Cattle Project itself, even help in finding a dairy heifer, or a bull calf for the new class. Call Tina Pohlmann (303) 828-3789.

PREMISES ID

A Premise ID is required to exhibit at the Boulder County Fair and Colorado State Fair for livestock animals. Premises identification will provide quick and accurate traceability of livestock and locations in the event of an animal health concern, which will help maintain the health of all Colorado livestock. For complete information and instructions, please visit the General Livestock Information page:  https://boulder.extension.colostate.edu/4-h-livestock-general-information/

PURCHASING MARKET ANIMALS FOR YOUR 4-H PROJECTS

It's time to think about purchasing your next market animal! When it comes to purchasing animals for a 4-H project, as always, purchasing any animal is up to the family's discretion. Things you may want to consider include: personal finances, current market prices, feed prices, and costs for overall care.

As we approach the new 4-H year, make sure that you discuss as a family what animal and how many animals you would like to purchase! We recommend consulting the Market Animal Budget Planner to help guide your discussions.

4-H HIPPOLOGY TEAM

(Mackenzie, Anna, Josie and Joseph at Roundup)

Boulder County 4-H Hippology Team – Stars!

The Boulder County 4-H Hippology Team, consisting of Mackenzie Weber, Joseph Schmid, Anna Thomas and Josie Thomas, recently competed in the hippology contest at the National Western Roundup in Denver in January of 2023. After two days of testing, judging and presenting solutions to four team problems, the team was awarded a Reserve Champion, with first place in team problems and second in exam phase, stations and judging. Overall, Mackenzie placed fifth, Joseph seventh (tying for sixth), Anna tenth and Josie eleventh.

(Joseph, Anna, Desi and Mackenzie at AQHA Congress)

The team has had a very successful prior two years, with many high placings as both individuals and as a team. In October 2022, the team of Mackenzie, Joseph, Anna and Desiree Shaklee traveled to Columbus, Ohio, to compete in the AQHA Congress hippology contest. At that contest, the team placed third overall out of a field of fifteen teams. Mackenzie was Reserve Champion individual, Joseph was tenth overall, and Anna was tenth in the judging phase.

(Desi, Mackenzie and Joseph at State Conference)

In June of 2022, the team of Mackenzie, Joseph and Desiree competed in the hippology contest at the Colorado State 4-H Conference, where they were named the State Champion Team. At that contest individual placings were especially impressive with Mackenzie placing first, Desiree second and Joseph third.

(Joseph, Mackenzie, Sequoia and Jessi)

(Joseph, Jessi, Donna, Mackenzie and Sequoia with their awards

at Arabian Nationals)

In late October 2021 the team of Mackenzie, Joseph, Sequoia Stark and Jessi Jacobucci traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to compete in the Arabian National Horse Show hippology contest. At that contest, the team was again named the Champion team with Mackenzie the Champion individual and Sequoia fifth overall and many individual top-ten placings in each phase of the contest. The win at the Arabian Nationals contest meant each team member was awarded a scholarship and a buckle, plus a scholarship and a jacket for Mackenzie as Champion individual. In addition, the team received a trophy which will be engraved with their names.

(Joseph, Sequoia and Mackenzie at  the State contest in 2021)

To start this impressive journey, Mackenzie, Joseph and Sequoia competed as individuals at the state hippology contest in 2021. The three were not eligible to compete as a team as Sequoia had already competed at Roundup, and a minimum of three members are needed to compete as a team. When placings were announced, Mackenzie was first, Sequoia third and Joseph fifth, earning them the right to compete at the Arabian Nationals contest.
