Estimating Carbon Cost

Once you have organised your materials into categories, you will estimate of the cost to the environment producing and shipping these materials in order to build this object.

• measure the masses of the different materials (weigh them at the weighing station) and then

• use the Carbon Footprint calculator to estimate the amount of carbon dioxide produced in making each material type.

you will need to register your school email address to use this site. Not all things are listed - use your best judgment.

If in doubt, make an educated guess. The exact values are not important

  (can be further subdivided, such as Aluminium or Copper or Steel)

• Plastics
  (can you further identify these - for example PP, PS, PET - research the plastic based on its properties - hard, flexible, or casings etc)

• Glass

• Foam

• Paper

• Electronics: circuitboards, motors, wires, etc.
