Chris Donahue is the Dannenberg Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department (CSD) at Carnegie Mellon University, and a part-time Research Scientist at Google DeepMind. At CMU, Chris leads the Generative Creativity Lab (G-CLef), with a mission to understand and shape the role that AI will play in the human creative process. This primarily involves work at the intersection of music and AI, though also includes work on other applications such as code, gaming, and language. Chris’s research has also translated to real-world impact in music, from integration into performances by professional bands (The Flaming Lips) to consumer music AI tools (Beat Sage, Hookpad Aria, Music Arena) that have been used hundreds of thousands of times. His work has also received coverage from MIT Tech Review, The Verge, Business Insider, and Pitchfork. Before CMU, Chris was a postdoctoral scholar in the CS department at Stanford advised by Percy Liang. Chris holds a PhD from UC San Diego where he was jointly advised by Miller Puckette (music) and Julian McAuley (CS).
Dr Piotr Mirowski is a Senior Staff Research Scientist at Google DeepMind, where he leads the AI and Society team, driving research on human-centered and participatory AI for creativity. Piotr obtained his PhD in computer science at New York University, supervised by Turing Award winner Prof. Yann LeCun (Outstanding Dissertation Award, 2011) and his research has covered diverse subjects from reinforcement learning and robotics to weather forecasting and human-computer interaction. Piotr authored over 80 papers and patents, including in Nature, and is an established expert in AI for creativity. A trained actor himself, Piotr also founded and directs a theatre company that pioneered improvised comedy with AI and robots, and his creative coding work and critical AI work include numerous collaborations with Zürich University of the Arts and STUDIO teatrgaleria in Warsaw
