Program/Instructors

WHAT THIS PROGRAM IS:  For one week, student participants will get to experience some of the laboratory skills, tests, and responsibilities that are part of being a professional medical laboratory tech.  They will be handling biohazardous materials and as such must follow safety protocols.  We will provide students with lab coats, gloves (please specify if you have a latex allergy), and eye protection.

ACTIVITIES:  Some of the activities the students will be doing include, blood typing, donor screening, growing, isolating and identifying bacteria, making and staining slides, identifying urine crystals, identifying blood cells under a microscope,  creating a case study presentation on a particular illness or condition, and much more.  Students who wish to type their own blood are welcome to but the permission form to do so must be signed by a parent/guardian unless the student is 18 or older.  Both instructors are experienced phlebotomists and will gladly draw their blood.

WHAT TO WEAR:  Students with shoulder-length or longer hair should bring hair ties or some other means of pulling it up or back.  It is standard lab safety practice that closed-toe shoes are a must - sneakers are fine but no sandals or flip-flops.  Clothing can be casual but should not have long flowy sleeves.

WHAT TO BRING:  Because this is NOT a residential program, students need to provide their own transportation.  We also do not provide lunch.  Students may bring their lunch or purchase it from other sources.  Water will be provided and limited snacks as well as pizza on the last day.  Above all else:  BRING YOUR CURIOSITY, QUESTIONS, AND OPEN MIND!!
