What is a Dental Implant?

Un implante dental es un pequeño tornillo de titanio que se coloca en el hueso del maxilar para reemplazar la raíz de un diente perdido. Con el tiempo, el hueso se une al tornillo de forma natural, en un proceso llamado oseointegración. Esto hace que el implante quede muy firme y seguro. Sobre el implante se colocan otras dos partes: un conector (llamado pilar) y una corona, que es la cara visible que imita al diente. Los implantes están hechos con materiales seguros y resistentes, diseñados para durar muchos años y soportar la fuerza de la masticación.

A dental implant is a small titanium screw placed in the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Over time, the bone bonds naturally to the screw in a process called osseointegration. This makes the implant very firm and secure. Two other parts are placed on top of the implant: a connector (called an abutment) and a crown, which is the visible surface that mimics the tooth. Implants are made of safe and durable materials, designed to last for many years and withstand the force of chewing.

Muchas personas conocen la parte de la cirugía, cuando se coloca el implante, pero no saben que la prótesis —la cara visible del diente— también es muy importante. La prótesis es lo que realmente se ve al sonreír y lo que usamos para comer y hablar, por eso debe estar bien hecha, ajustada y con una buena estética. Esta parte del tratamiento necesita experiencia, precisión y sentido del detalle por parte del dentista.

Many people are familiar with the surgical part, when the implant is placed, but they don't know that the prosthesis—the visible surface of the tooth—is also very important. The prosthesis is what is actually seen when we smile and what we use to eat and speak, so it must be well-made, well-fitting, and aesthetically pleasing. This part of the treatment requires experience, precision, and a sense of detail on the part of the dentist.

Existen distintos tipos de prótesis sobre implantes. Las prótesis removibles, que se pueden quitar y poner, son una opción más económica. Están hechas de resina y se sujetan sobre varios implantes. Se pueden quitar para limpiarlas. Son cómodas, pero no tanto como una prótesis fija. Las prótesis fijas van pegadas o atornilladas al implante, y solo el dentista puede retirarlas. Se usan tanto para dientes individuales como para rehabilitar toda la boca. Se hacen con cerámica o zirconio, materiales muy estéticos y duraderos. Son la opción más parecida a tener dientes naturales.

There are different types of implant-supported prostheses. Removable prostheses, which can be removed and replaced, are a more economical option. They are made of resin and are supported by several implants. They can be removed for cleaning. They are comfortable, but not as comfortable as a fixed prosthesis. Fixed prostheses are glued or screwed to the implant, and only the dentist can remove them. They are used for both individual teeth and for full-mouth restorations. They are made of ceramic or zirconium, highly aesthetic and durable materials. They are the closest option to having natural teeth.
